“Custer was a power hungry fool.”
He was. Last in his class at the point, and willing to make war on women and children to feed his ambition.
However, the Indians displayed a high degree of military acumen, as well.
My boss (wife) and I visited Little Big Horn last year within two weeks of the anniversary of the battle. We see on TV they were fighting on the dirt with dust flying everywhere and the Indians were circling them taking fire and slowly winning the skirmish.
The grass grows about 2 feet high in the area from the Little Bighorn River to Last Stand Hill and the area is rolling plains, not flat desert. A lot of cavalry were killed by snipers in the grass they never saw. And Crazy Horse led the charges drawing fire from the single shot rifles the cavalry was using so the indians could get in and use their repeaters to take out Custer’s forces quite rapidly. The soldiers never had a chance. They were lucky to have made it to Last Stand Hill as while they traveled west on the run. But when they got there, they were hit from nine different directions, surrounded.
You’re right. Custer was a power hungry fool. And a dead one, also.

The Gen II DPMS parts are available now and could easily shave a half pound off that weight. I like it as it, with tuned gas port, it is very soft shooting, much less than I recall the M14 to be.
It appears that Crazy Horse led the charge from one direction while Gall led men from the other.
Custer’s forces were all strung out trying to make it to the military crest of Last Stand Hill, when they were hit from left and right.
You probably remember that fire some years back that exposed so many artifacts.
Thanks for the advice. I will definitely consider that approach!
It was amazing to me that even the horses had graves set up for them.
It was unfortunate that, in my mind, the fires were set rather that by accident. The original fire came in from the north to last stand and the firefighters had to use the road as a line wetting around it. But what was worse was that another fire started at the Reno-Benteen battle site a couple of miles away a few days later. People are real morons sometimes.

“People are real morons sometimes.”
Yup. At least this idiocy brought some good with it.
