Trump Envisions an A.T.F. Without the A or T
New York Times ^ | 01/19/2018 | ALI WATKINS and MATT APUZZO

Posted on 01/19/2018 2:11:22 PM PST by sodpoodle

The Trump administration has drafted plans to strip key authorities from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, senior administration officials said on Friday, an acknowledgment that the agency has all but abandoned its legacy of fighting liquor and tobacco smugglers.

The A.T.F. traces its roots to Eliot Ness and the Prohibition-era federal agents made famous in the movie “The Untouchables.” But the modern A.T.F. has focused its stagnant budget on violent crime and bombings, while tobacco smuggling — a little-known crime that costs the government billions in lost taxes each year — goes largely unenforced.

This is crazy. Who ever heard of making the government smaller and taking authority and power away from bureaucracy? Winning!

Is creating a government agency to focus on taking guns away from citizens making the government smaller?

In order to audit gun shop paperwork why do they need to carry firearms..?

they shouldn’t carry firearms.

Thanks, Nixon. Also, thanks for the $10,000 cash reporting requirement, which has not been inflation adjusted since it was enacted in 1970.

I don't think we read the same article. Here's the first statement...

The Trump administration has drafted plans to strip key authorities from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives

Unless my reading comprehension is gone, this article is about striping power from government rather than creating a new agency. You can complain that Trump isn't going far enough, but I don't understand your point.

The amazing thing is the previous GOP Presidents and Congresses wouldn’t even take little baby steps like consolidating the absurdly redundant federal law enforcement agencies.

No kidding! I can't believe how much I'm enjoying President Trump. I remember being in the voting booth and asking myself if I could really vote for Trump. I reluctantly voted for Trump. Now, in 2020, I'm going to vote for Trump with a smile on my face. So much winning!

Prohibition is over (see 21st Amendment), so the “A” should go. Tobacco is a legal substance, so the “T” should go. Firearms ownership is Constitutionally protected (see 2nd Amendment), so the “F” should go. That leaves the “E” for explosives. We do not need an entire federal agency just for explosives. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives should be abolished.

Well, I think you are failing to see the big picture. It sounds to meek like they are an empowering an agency to go after guns full time and with full force.

Fair enough. That is certainly a valid concern, but I still consider it a win to see government loosing ground rather than continually gaining.

Before Trump, it would have seemed natural to expand to ATF to include sugary drinks as well.

Read the article - the enforcement on alcohol and tobacco is not going away, it will be enforced by a new agency under the Treasury Department. I think the only change is that more time and money will be spent enforcing gun laws against noncriminal citizens.

“E” is covered by the 2nd Amendment as well.

Needs to be without the F !! No exceptions , End them now. The 2nd amendment is absolute.
