IIRC, Laird Hamilton invented the tow-in using a Zodiac inflatable on some big breaks in Hawaii.
Awesome pics. I took a few minutes to check out the surf coming in a bit further north, around Pacifica. Quite a sight to see! Thanks for posting!

The idea of jet ski assist soon spread to other big wave spots, including Mavericks and Ghost Trees (the spot Grampa Dave mentioned right off Pebble Beach). However, as all 3 breaks began to be better understood, the top big wave surfers realized they could be paddled. So, literally on the turn of a dime, skis were 'culturally' shunned as paddle surfing once again took priority.
In addition, various local agencies got involved to actually legally ban the use of skis in certain protected areas. Monterey bay is one, which is why they were banned in Carmel, rendering Ghost Trees unrideable (it actually breaks among rocks, making it far too dangerous to paddle). Mavericks is also off-limits, but a special waiver was issued to allow them in the vicinity for water safety purposes & life saving operations.
The swell that POF experiencing was the last of a series that lit up the N Hemisphere. For those interested, here's a profile of three different big waves spots that all broke huge during the past week:

As for me, I bee-lined it to Baja, where it was big, but not nearly as huge, and under much more manageable conditions.
No, didnt see the Farallons, but maybe a bit too far south. No whales, either...just lots of hug eboiling surf and LOUD!
We’ve got a weekend reserved at Mission Ranch Inn in about three months...their first weekend opening! It’s a great place.
Could swear I had a hamburger there a couple months ago, on the porch overlooking the water.
Maybe it was further back.
And now you have a new nickname, yuh stoopit Orick...
Some very dramatic surf photos from Oregon during the same storm...

They have the very nice outdoor patio overlooking the sheep pasture and the bay across to Point Lobos. Wonderful outdoor dining in the summer months.
Thanks for posting that link. Those are incredible waves and shots. Southern Oregon is famous for strong winter storms from Coos Bay down to Gold Beach. Lots of storm watchers come,in when storms like this one hot. It’s been on my to-do list for decades!
Love sitting there drinking a beer and eating a hamburger...
Ever eat at The Rock, South of Carmel?
Love eating there on the patio outside.
Don’t even care if it’s raining.
Haven’t heard of it. I’ll check it out. Is it in Big Sir? Or still Carmel?
11.5 miles south of Carmel, on the right hand side.
1 mile north of Bixby bridge.
Luv it.
They installed fire feature on the back porch a year ago but, I never sit there.
I sit on the south side so, I can gaze at the bridge and watch people climb to the edge of the rocks as they take pictures with the bridge in the background.
Order the hamburger, fries and grilled vegetables.
That makes sense. I was half right about it being Laird, but wrong about the jet ski being first. Do you or have you ever surfed. Other than downhill skiing, it is the biggest rush when you're in the pocket.
I was also one of the early skateboarders. I had the first nylon? wheels board (Makaha) while everyone were still using steel wheels. We had a long steep asphalt slope on one side of my Junior HS field. I could ride it sideways like a wave, while the steel wheels could only go straight down due to lack of grip. There were many injuries once you hit the flat area and got jarred by the sudden change.
I surfed when I was a kid up until the 10’ balsa hobie board I was using whacked me on the side of my head. Knocked out, concussion, broken jaw, sprained neck and chipped teeth.
Buddy of mine saw it and saved my life.
Got back on that horse a couple of times after but it’s been decades.
Downhill is a rush.
