Also, with a dwindling domestic demand for parts and services, the domestic downstream suppliers were either forced to sell out to foreign concerns, move operations offshore, folded up and closed shop, or had their processes outright stolen and given to chinese manufacturers.
Work in the the auto industry, or in the machine tool industry, and you will learn real quick what the term “industrial espionage” really means.
The chinese will steal every bit of tech that isn't nailed down. They don't give a shit. All that matters to them is that they got it.

This has been going on for 30+ years now. People in the US have retired now after selling US industry out to the highest foreign bidder.

We need to restore across the board tariffs, and it should be tied to the labor force participation.
As the labor force participation rises we can start lowering the tariffs. If it falls we increase them.
