Apple on Tuesday took the next step toward protecting Mac users from recently disclosed security vulnerabilities that have been shown to affect many kinds of devices.
The move brings Apple closer to being on par with Microsoft in terms of deploying protections for older versions of its desktop operating systems.
On Tuesday Apple said it has come out with patches to the Meltdown security vulnerability -- which impacts several generations of Intel chips -- for macOS Sierra and OS X El Capitan, which were released in 2016 and 2015, respectively. Apple patched its latest Mac operating system, macOS High Sierra, earlier in January.
The Meltdown issue was first disclosed at the beginning of the month alongside another issue called Spectre that many companies have said is harder to exploit.
When it announced the first Meltdown patch, Apple said that it was working on mitigations against Spectre for Macs, as well as devices running the iOS mobile operating system.
Updating software to protect against the two vulnerabilities hasn't been without incident. On Monday Intel said some people using its Broadwell and Haswell chips have been dealing with "higher system reboots" after applying updates.

Thanks. Let us know how the patch works for you. And my son thanks you too, he can’t believe how up to date I manage to be...all by my little ol self! Yes, I give you the props!
Dunno if anybody posted this, so I’ll tag it on for a free ride here:
Apple reportedly plans to discontinue the first-gen iPhone X later this year
Ive seen it everywhere. Its FUD SEASON. Its not worth mentioning. The blogger who started it doesnt have a clue what hes talking about. Now hes come out saying Apples going to replace the iPhone X with a 6.5" LCD screen iPhone without Apples signature 3D Touch or high quality rear dual lens camera, because Apple needs to get the price down because sales are so dismal due to high prices or something . . .
Hes ignoring the fact that Apple has an iPhone that sells for $349, $449, $549, $669, $699, $799, $999, and $1149, or, essentially an iPhone that can fit anyones budget. Hes an idiot.
I guess it’s a good thing I bought the main parts of my PC years ago.
Ah, I see. I don’t see too many Apple stories - I keep up more on Linux and Windoze miscellany.
If folks knew, they would never touch another Apple product again. I know I won't. Steve Jobs original vision was simplicity. Well that is long long long gone.
I don’t need it for my Mac IIcx with the Motorola 68030.
Install the patch or this could happen!
