‘Tide Pod challenge’: the internet joke that’s become a dangerous craze

The concept of “washing your mouth out with soap” may have originated with exasperated parents, but it appears some teens on social media are taking the idea to a whole new, actually dangerous, level.

In what’s been deemed the first big social media meme of 2018, the “Tide Pod challenge” consists of biting into a capsule of concentrated laundry detergent in a bid to impress followers. However, health authorities are not so impressed.

A Tide Pod is a popular US brand of detergent capsule, encased in soluble wrapping. It’s been compared to candy (and probably often mistaken for it by young children) due to its bright colours and fruity fragrance.

But it is absolutely not edible and, possibly due to the concentration of chemicals, is more dangerous to consume than regular soap (which should also not be ingested).

Hmm, when I was in college in the late 1970s, "Mr. Yuck"(?) stickers were making the rounds...although I believe the intent was for parents of youngin's to [use the stickers to] mark dangerous household items.

I guess it's too late for the current crop of parents to get their heads out of their butts and reclaim the concept of "common sense".

I’m sorry kids. I need to get out more. I thought it was aimed at unattentative parents. The ad I saw was some little kid about to get into mothers’ Tide pods which were on the floor........my bad.......sigh

Two state lawmakers this week decided to put on a play in their neighbors barn.

“While our super performance will only be seen by people who pay a nickel to our friend Guppy, we urge all growed ups and kids alike to come see us sing songs and act out awesome action scenes. My mom is sewing a curtain for us and we’re using the hay loft like a stage so it’ll be really neat,” said the lawmakers, Sen. Brad Hoylman and Assemblywoman Aravella Simotas.

You are right on the money. I would also strive to take whatever measures are necessary to make student loans dischargeable in U.S. Bankruptcy proceedings. If I ran Tide, I might be tempted to bundle the pods with tubes of Testor’s Red Tail model glue and a dozen brown paper bags.

Can someone confirm for me that this is actually happening? I have heard for several weeks about some “Tide Pod” thing but I assumed it was a joke. Kind of like where they were saying the new iPhone could be charged by microwaving it.

Are there people actually eating the pods? Or is this just an internet hoax and the kids are having a good laugh at the old people’s expense?

"....It’s time that you recognized the danger to those least able to protect themselves from a poisonous product packaged like candy...."

Who in the hale would eat laundry detergent? Either a moron or an idiot.

Oh, but wait. Never mind....

Good grief. It’s TIDE PODS. Laundry detergent. If you can read the package then you’re old enough to know not to eat them! Heck, if you’re a kid and see mom throw it in the washing machine you probably know it’s not food.

Tide needs to just add a sticker to their products... "If you're stupid enough to eat these pods, you need to die, so you won't breed more stupid people."

Seems to me that the dummies swallowing those things should have sense enough to not do that. There are some things that just can’t be fixed to protect the less than intelligent from harming themselves.

There's an old saying, "Some people can learn from books, so from observing other people. But some people just have to pee on the electric fence for themselves."

Hopefully anyone who eats the laundry detergent is struck sterile or deal, to ensure they don't breed.
