SURPRISING FINDS The surprises began almost as soon as a camera was lowered into the first borehole, around December 1. The undersides of ice shelves are usually smooth due to gradual melting. But as the camera passed through the bottom of the hole, it showed the underside of the ice adorned with a glittering layer of flat ice crystalslike a jumble of snowflakesevidence that in this particular place, sea water is actually freezing onto the base of the ice instead of melting it.
It blew our minds, says Christina Hulbe, a glaciologist from the University of Otago in New Zealand, who co-led the expedition. The Ross Ice Shelf is considered more stable, at present, than many of West Antarcticas other floating shelvesand this observation could help explain that: if a few inches of sea water periodically freezes onto the bottom of its ice, this could buffer it from thinning more rapidly.

Run in circles, scream and shout!
How long will it take for the Gorebull Warming elites to claim that deep ice is a sure sign of Gorebull Warming?
two word response from NOAA: “Oh Crap !”
“..if a few inches of sea water periodically freezes onto the bottom of its ice, this could buffer it from thinning more rapidly.”
Can’t bring themselves to say the ice is getting thicker, not thinner.
It appears that most environmental scientists are compromised fools who despise scientific method and despise facts that don’t jive with their political-based preconceptions. What LIB flunkies.
National Geographic is so deeply invested into the Global Hot Air scaremongering that any contrary evidence at all would blow their minds.
Or....the breaking of the ice sheets isnt from warming at all, but from mechanical stresses. Some from ice shelves over-expanding, and others from ocean-currents shifting and locally raising the sea level.
“It blew our minds”
Proves that they wanted ONE outcome more than another. When the desired outcome didn’t come, their minds are blown. Wrong reaction. The right reaction is: “So that’s what’s happening! Happy to find out the truth of the matter.”
Too many “scientists” expect their experiments to go a certain way, and inevitably bias their experiments so they do go that way.
"Well, there goes our funding. :-("
Nice to encounter other folks that use that.
BTW, have you ever actually done that? I can attest that it can be oddly therapeutic....
Wow, this guy actually sounds like a scientist!
No mention of the 91 volcanoes that were discovered under the Western Antarctic last year.....
So as it melts....it's building underneath. So simple....(and they were surprised?)
But, but....the oceans are rising at an uncontrollable rate.....and we're all gonna die!!
Are volcanoes warm? Probably Trump’s fault.
Yep - funny how bad news for them is always good news for Mother earth....
They had to pile on six paragraphs of propaganda before getting to this paragraph.
And “as expected”?? Real scientists do not investigate any natural phenomenon with any preconceptions. Ever.
Frustration is a dish best served very cold.
