For instance, a poster and I were discussing how long canning lids last. In my heyday of prepping, I bought 2 cases of Ball lids. I also bought a lot of tattler lids and have been enjoying learning how to use those. BUT I dont know if I should be using up the Ball lids or if they will last.
And the rings on the tattlers, not sure about those either.
Nor how to best store any of them. I LOVE mylar and oxygen absorbers! But I dont know if thats the best way, or perhaps a foodsaver, or if they should be in my moist cool basement or in the drier, warmer house .
This subject doesn't really fit on any of the other weekly or subject-oriented threads that I know about. Sorry if I am stepping on any toes here.
Anyway, thats the sort of thing I could ask on grannys threads and get 5-50 responses! We could bounce around ideas and share any experiences we had.
So here we go!
(I hope someone else will join me here, LOL!)
BTW, Im now an East Tennessee Appalachian granny, so I figured I could start this thread in memory of nw_arizona_granny.

There are many articles with suggestions on useful things to do with empty tin cans.
Just do a search for "what do do with a tin can".
Here is one link:
18 Off-Grid Uses For Tin Cans
https://urbansurvivalsite.com/18-off-grid-uses-for-tin-cans/
When camping on a shoestring this is what we used to do with a large can like a #10 or #12 (approx. 1 gallon size).
Back in the day it was often called a Hobo Stove.
You can cook directly on the top or with a small pan or pot.
A second tin can makes a handy small pot to heat liquids.

Just wow! Finally stopped in at the new grocery store a few towns over. The knee wouldn’t let me get to but half of it and I’m about dead. But glad to report, it was almost like going to a big city grocery. Fifty bazillion different olive oils. Countless deli type and jarred olives. Saw my first dragon fruit in real life - yeah, I know, deprived. Didn’t find any truffle oil though. The knee won’t let me shop there often but at least it’s an option when I want something better than moldy strawberries at my podunk store.
I didn’t know this thread existed. Glad someone bumped it into view!

FIREFLIES!
We’ve not seen those here for such a long time. About 10 or 12 years ago they were seen in their magical flight. Like the bees, these small creatures are diminishing in population. Traveling through Louisiana one summer evening, they were more than abundant! Unfortunately, a good number of them were found on the windshield of the vehicle.
Fireflies, lightening bugs, these will always fascinate the young and young at heart.

Do hope your arms and hands are receiving some much needed TLC.
I noticed the local “Michaels” has Christmas candles on sale, 70% off.
I bought one, 4” x 6” cylinder, for $3.60. Far less than the cost of an equivalent volume of paraffin.
Will probably get a few more if I happen by there again.
About 10 years ago, the cooking thread had a lively discussion
regarding cast iron, cooking in it and the
cleaning of it. Last year, this thread followed suit.
We spoke of certain foods which are not compatible
with cast iron, such as tomatoes.
How to clean the pot; would this be the best pot
and can it be used safely.
This last week a video was seen which might be of interest to those who participated in this discussion.
After cooking, cleaning
the pot
is of the utmost importance. Once clean, seasoning the pot, just as
important.
BTW, this you tuber has some decent cowboy meals
included in his collection as well. His Root
Beer potatoes and caramelized onions is one for the books.

I’ve been following the corona virus threads and there has been a lot of discussion about prepping more for whatever the future holds.
What about starting a new thread in light of what we’re going through so people can talk about stuff like this and leave the virus thread to dealing with the medical and stats on the virus?
