"it is mainly about how the Democrats tried to stop Lincoln and Republicans from passing the 13th amendment to free the slaves."

Never watched it, but spent a lot of time in my younger days reading old and new books about Lincoln's life and death. The Dems tried to stop the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 too. If it wasn't for the Republicans, it would never have passed.

From Wikipedia:

"When the bill came before the full Senate for debate on March 30, 1964, the "Southern Bloc" of 18 southern Democratic Senators and one Republican Senator led by Richard Russell (D-GA) launched a filibuster to prevent its passage.[16] Said Russell: "We will resist to the bitter end any measure or any movement which would have a tendency to bring about social equality and intermingling and amalgamation of the races in our (Southern) states."[17]

16 - Narrative: The Civil Rights Act of 1964

17 - The Civil Rights Act: What JFK, LBJ, Martin Luther King and Malcolm X had to say

It also says that Senator Strom Thurmond (D-SC) was the most fervent opponent of the Bill's passage.

But nobody ever holds Lincoln responsible for NOT being able to avoid the Civil War.

Oh, there are many who would blame Lincoln for the war, legitimately or otherwise. I find it interesting considering the insurrectionists launched their rebellion even before Lincoln assumed office.

What would you have had him do?

“What would you have had him do?”

My answer to that would be if there ever was a time for “nuance” this was it. From his words during the campaign, to his words after the election, everything he did could have restrained war. And if he knew that many people were going to die, I bet he would have done some things differently. I’m just saying if he was as great a man everybody gives him credit for, he could handled the situation better.

Lincoln did everything within his power (and even overextended a bit) to prevent war. The only other thing he could have done was surrender. There is no conceivable circumstance that I, as an American, could envision him doing this.
