History of tattooing is rewritten after world's earliest figurative inkings are found on 5,000-year-old Egyptian mummies in the British Museum
The world's earliest figurative tattoos have been discovered on 5,000-year-old Egyptian mummies at the British Museum, rewriting the history of inking.
The tattoos are of a wild bull and a Barbary sheep on the upper-arm of a male mummy, and S-shaped motifs on the upper-arm and shoulder of a female.
The find dates tattoos containing imagery rather than geometric patterns to 1,000 years earlier than previously thought.
Researchers say the discovery 'transforms' our understanding of how people lived during this period.
The tattoos were found on male and female 'Gebelein' mummies.
The 5,000-year-old male mummy, which is naturally preserved, has been one of the star displays at the British Museum, visited by millions each year, since its discovery in a cemetery over 100 years ago.
Previous research revealed that the man, known as Gebelein Man A, died a violent death between the ages of around 18 to 21, from a stab wound to his back.
But dark smudges on his arm, which appeared as faint markings under natural light, have now been examined.
Infrared technology has now revealed that the smudges were tattoos of two slightly overlapping horned animals well known in Predynastic Egyptian art.
Daniel Antoine, the British Museum's curator of physical anthropology, said the male mummy was 'one of the most popular displays at the British Museum'.
'His remains were preserved naturally perhaps because he was buried in the peak of summer or was in a shallow grave,' he added.

I thought Outzi was supposed to have “rewritten” the “history of tattooing”.
Tramp Stamp Man?
Yes, but he was a white male....................
Perhaps Outzi’s were merely “geometric markings”.
Ah, yes, of course.
Still waiting to hear all the non-Barbary “contributions” the Fraud’s chosen people made to the “very fabric of America”.
Thanks Red Badger.
You obviously have seen the new blockbuster movie “The Black Panther”...........................
But his tattoos were just lines.
There are pictures and designs.
Tats on a fat ugly chick - making matters a 1000 times worse
Tats on a god gifted beautiful woman - like putting bumper stickers on a $250,000 Ferrari
Tats on a woman - appealing to a small percentage of guys that actually like that crap as apposed to 100% of guys that have no problem with zero tats.
Outzi is the earliest known biker. He not only was tattooed, he had a beard, long hair, was wearing leathers, and was carrying edged weapons.
Proof that some haven’t evolved any during the past 5000 years.
....AND HAD BEEN SHOT IN THE BACK.........................
What about Otzi, the Iceman? He had tattoos and might have been dead longer than those Egyptians.
Dead white Europeans don’t count.......................
Let’s not be sexist: I’m a guy and I’m amazed both at the beautiful women and the handsome men I see, who are blessed with physical beauty and choose to trash it. The bumper stickers on the Ferrari is very apt.
