To some in Washington, D.C., he was a living legend who advocated for the citys poor. To others he was a controversial figure remembered for being re-elected mayor despite serving a prison sentence for possession of crack cocaine.
On Saturday, an 8-foot-high bronze statue of former Mayor Marion Barry was unveiled on Pennsylvania Avenue in the nations capital, just blocks from the White House. The statue, designed by artist Steven Weitzman, was ordered by the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities, Washington's Fox 5 reported. The estimated $250,000 cost was covered by a combination of public and private funds, the Washington Business Journal reported.
The move to honor Barry, who died at age 78 in 2014, may seem mystifying to non-Washingtonians. But among Barry's supporters, the statue is an appropriate tribute to a legitimate D.C. icon a man so popular and influential that he walked out of federal prison and immediately began winning elections again with one of the most improbable comebacks in American political history.
"He was a living legend," said City Councilman Trayon White, during an appearance Thursday on an influential local radio show hosted by Kojo Nnamdi. "Marion Barry was an integral part of getting D.C. where it is today. ... To honor a man like that who touched so many people it's right for the city. Not everyone views Barry so fondly. When the radio show started taking phone calls, the first caller blasted Barry as an "abysmal mayor" who presided over an era of corruption and mismanagement but now benefits from what the caller referred to as "convenient historical amnesia."

Which is third world status.
Is there a Brass Plaque with the words “The Bitch set me up” on the base of the Statue next to the Crack Pipe?
Marion Barry was a staunch proponent against Constitutional government. He particularly disliked the Second Amendment:
Members of the D.C. Council begrudgingly, but unanimously, voted for a bill that would allow individuals to carry the firearms if they meet a number of requirements.
I dont believe in guns. I dont believe in carrying guns, said council member Marion Barry, Ward 8 Democrat and a former four-term mayor. I think the public ought to understand that all of us here are doing something we really dont want to do.
I am offended bY this statue. Tear it down. NOW!
As long as this statue is erect, it will serve as a reminder to all of us that the folks who run Washington DC are deranged racist miscreants.
America, represented on the east coast by a status of Marion Barry and on the west coast by a statue of Harvey Weinstein on the Casting Couch. At the same time, lefties fight to tear down Washington & Lincoln.
Did the “bitch set it up”?
Hope the pigeons have fun with it.
Monument to a pimp and a crackhead.
That'd be self-admitted car thief Trayon White, who brags about how he "empowers people who suffer from the social impact of crime, violence, drug abuse. . ." and then praises a crackhead: one thug eulogizes another.
Up until 2010....I’d never been to DC ever.
I arrived that year and worked for 3.5 years in the local area. I’ve walked over different parts of the west-side, the central region, northeast, and the southeast (the Anacostia neighborhood). I’ve ridden the subway lines over the entire city.
I think most Americans would be in absolute shock at how DC city runs...the amount of corruption...violent crime...and acceptance of federal leadership.
Barry was simply a product of the ‘system’. The DC city council are a product of the system. Most everyone agrees that corruption is destroying the city, but there’s no desire to fix it.
One of the great examples of corruption: the city gave out a grant (somewhere in the $250,000 range) to a youth-recreation group to refurbish some building on the east-side. About two years after this grant, some reporter went back to look at various grants given out. The building in this case? Well...they painted the place up...put in some renovation...and it became a ‘gentlemen’s club’ (meaning a bar and strip-club). The youth-recreation group? Mostly fake. Punishment? None.
Next, the 8 ft bronze of William Jefferson Clinton’s member.
If only it was of him snorting coke.
