The Dead Sea Scrolls - (Bible Archaeology, Part 9)

(Clocks in at about an hour).

Wasn't sure if this should go in General or Religion. Since it focuses more on the archaeological find than the religious implications, I decided to post it here.

This is part 9 of a series I've been teaching on archaeological evidence that supports the Bible. Covered the Dead Sea Scrolls this week. My voice was a little shaky due to feeling under the weather. If you enjoyed this, you can read more at my blog, depthsofpentecost.com. Thanks for watching!

This is great! I can’t watch it all right now, but I don’t think it is shaky at all. Very listenable, which is important for me because I have trouble reading these days. Well done so far.

Thanks for posting, this is a great learning experience for me.

What I love about FR...:)

pcottraux, that was great! Just finished watching it-I very much enjoyed that, not only as a history buff, but as someone on a journey to God.

I just watched “The Case for Christ” for the first time last week, so this is very timely for me. (I have to watch or listen, can’t read too well anymore)

I am going to check out your other work...thank you.

Why no discussion of the Septuagint, very strange omission?

It was made before Christ, more than a 1000 years before the masoretic text was copied.

Importantly, Christ’s citations of the old testament are most often distinctly septuagint versions.

Particularly relevant to your talk, the dead sea scrolls agree with the septuagint much more often than the masoretic text.

Which makes it hard to readily dismiss the Septuagint i’d say.

There’s a typo in one of your slides that dates masoretic text to 1000 BC instead of AD, but I think it’s not a big deal because everyone can figure out what you meant.

I didn’t mean to dismiss the Septuagint altogether. I recognize its importance as an Old Testament translation. Obviously it and the Dead Sea scrolls would agree very much since the two are very close in time.

Since many popular translations of the Bible today used the Masoretic text as their Old Testament, I guess the goal of the class was to see how close the Masoretic is to the Dead Sea scrolls, which stand as the current oldest Old Testament. My point being that it hasn’t changed significantly enough to put any major doctrines in doubt.

Next week I’ll be teaching a similar class about the New Testament papyri; I will ping you if interested. I’ll try to weed out any typos before Sunday night. ;-)

I’m glad you enjoyed it so much, rlmorel! I’ve read “The Case for Christ,” as well as two more books from Lee Strobel’s series (”The Case for the Real Jesus” and “The Case for a Creator”). Also can’t recommend “Cold Case Christianity” by J. Warner Wallace enough. Consider these apologetics must-reads.

Next Sunday night I’ll be teaching a similar class on the New Testament papyri. This is part of a 12-part series I’ve been doing on the archaeological evidence for the Bible stories. Some of them have been livestreamed on Facebook, but my wife has been recording it with a better camera so we can put them on YouTube.

If it’s okay with the mods here I’m going to start sharing them on FR (there’s three weeks left) since the response has been mostly positive. I didn’t want to be accused of click-baiting. I’ll link you to any past ones you want to see.

Hope you guys enjoyed it! Thanks so much for watching!

I’ll have three more classes up in the coming weeks, focusing on the New Testament from here forward...can ping you if you’re interested.

Please do ping me. I was very impressed. My brother and I get together every Thursday night, and I am going to suggest we watch your video.

LOL, if the mods give you trouble, I’ll dive in and stick up for you.

One of the things I love about Free Republic is the fact that there is a vast body of knowledge out there that can be tapped into.

I want info on Energy issues? We have Freepers who know the industry.

Health Care? We have all types who can contribute (including me)

Military matters? Check.

Religion? Yep.

And...Archeology? Well, yes...:)

This may be a stretch, but stick with me...:) I am a big proponent of a Free Market economy, where the knowledge of millions of people is accumulated and decisions about how much to produce, at what price, and where they should be sent are not made by 10 “smart” men in a room, but by those millions of people voting by holding their hard earned dollar bills up in the air to bid for goods and services.

The collective knowledge about millions of small details that no 10 socialist men in a room can possibly know, makes all those decisions instead, without input or conscious decision in many cases, but efficiently sends goods and services in the right amounts to where they are wanted and needed.

It is the “Invisible Hand” of a Free Market economy.

I like to think that Free Republic does something similar with respect to knowledge. When an issue comes up and a thread is started, we don’t have 3 talking heads on some news station opining on the causes and meaning of a situation then delivering it to unthinking consumers of the news in a neatly packed (for them) bundle.

We have people who can be regarded as knowledgeable and erudite on a given subject, who can be truthful, and are not bashful about giving their point of view. And there are others who jump in, add a small piece of the puzzle here and there, someone else contests a statement, and we hammer away at an issue until it is possible we see the issue far more clearly and accurately than any news organization.

We make mistakes, but that is what freedom of speech is about...the right to make mistakes and disagree.

So when I started watching your video, I didn’t have the time, but...it drew me right in. It exposed me to knowledge I am either too busy to stumble across on my own, or don’t have the time to find the right resources.

Your video did just that for me. So, yeah...ping me!
