The AMC Eagle was the follow up to the Gremlin. An SUV chassis by today's standards on a bullet proof stretched Gremlin frame and straight six, with locking hubs real 4 wheel drive.

That Eagle was so far ahead of its time. Fantastic car.

Unfortunately most everything from the 70's ignored corrosion technology so they all rust apart.

And what was so ugly about a Pinto? Its looks were the best thing going for it. The drivetrain, the reliability, the safety issues, and a dozen other problems made the Pinto a bad car.

But it was not that bad looking.

My Gremlin was blue. And it was NOT butt ugly. Because it had no butt.

It essentially was an AMC Hornet with no rear end. I liked it.

The days of non servo braking made us better drivers, as you never knew which way your car was going to lurch when you applied firm brakes. You had to be on the ready.

I had two Ford Pintos. They were great little cars and you could work on them yourself.

Never did but knew some who owned a few of them (Pacer/Gremlin/Pinto/Thing/Aztec) - most of them figured out that they shouldn’t have bought them but a few considered them “badges of merit” (I think they all vote for the other side these days....

I agree that the VW Thing was a cool car. Plus it was a rag top.

Check out the Netflix show Stranger Things. Set in 1980 (? Early 80’s anyway) and you’ll see all kinds of cars from that date and back 10 years.

I knew someone who bought one of these.
Drove it once across Golden Gate Bridge and then sold it.
Scared the heck out of her with cross winds.

Take another look at the Aztek... it was just ahead of its time. Now, it looks quite normal.

Exactly. The Aztek was a taste of the ugly cars we now have.
