The bizarre creature was discovered in Island Beach State Park, New Jersey on May 4.
Stephanie Hall discovered the body of the six-foot animal while she was returning from a run.
She’d encountered a seal on the way out and – wanting to give it a bit more room on the way back – she went further up the beach and found the fish.
“I saw this head of something scary in the sand just over a dune,” said Mrs Hall.
“I thought it was bizarre and cool looking so I took some pictures.
“Anyway I had no idea what it was and posted it to my town webpage hoping some fishermen could answer.
“They did and here we are now.”
They though the fish was a sturgeon, a species which has been around since the Triassic period, up to 245 million years ago.
The series can grow to approximately 14 feet long and can weigh up to 800 pounds.
Amazingly, they can live for up to 60 years.
Larry Hanja of The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection said the likeliest candidates, the Atlantic and the shortnose sturgeon, were both endangered.

As a kid, I once caught a sturgeon in Lake Ontario with my bare hands.
It had found its way into a very tight channel between some large rocks.
Looks like a transition to an alligator.

Classic kids show from the Craft family. I loved that show, and the other space-based one with Bob Denver when I watched the reruns after school as a kid in the early 70s. They were soooo weird. Do you remember the Bananna Splits? I loved the music and have been a rock n roller ever since.
