I had to shorten the title so it's misleading
Dentists can SMELL your fear: Study warns their ability to detect patients' anxiety may cause them to make more mistakes
Study of dental students found that dentists can smell when a patient is anxious
It found this can make them more likely to make mistakes and perform poorly
Students donated two shirts each, one worn during stress and one during calm
Performed procedures on mannequins wearing the shirts, and they did significantly worse on the dummies wearing the 'stressed' clothing
Fear of the dentist is a real thing - but it may cause your doctor to make mistakes.
A study of dental students has found that dentists may be able to smell when a patient is anxious or afraid, and it increases the chances of them performing poorly.
Previous studies have found that people experiencing high emotions, particularly negative ones, do emit body odors that can influence the perception of people around them.
'The finding is the first real-world evidence that chemical signals hidden in our body odor can betray our emotions and influence the behaviors of those around us', said Valentina Parma at the International School for Advanced Studies in Trieste, Italy, to New Scientist.
To determine if body odor can trigger anxiety, Parma's team recruited 24 dental student volunteers to donate two shirts each.
One was worn during a stressful exam, and the other during a calm lecture.
The shirts were treated with a chemical that hides body odor, and a separate team of 24 students performed dental procedures on mannequins wearing the clothing.
Examiners graded students on their performances.

They can smell your breath, too. And vice-versa.
I would advice never scheduling a dentist appointment right after lunch.
Lol!
Is it safe?
Perhaps the dentist just sucks. There’s that.
“Marathon Man” is always in my head when I go to the dentist.

I force myself to go to the dentist every six months for a cleaning. I absolutely hate going to the dentist but years ago, when I went through a period of neglect, I needed major work done including a root canal. Since the six month cleanings, my teeth have been in pretty good shape and I have a good chance of keeping them for rest of my life.
Still, that high pitched drill they use at cleanings just goes through my skull. That's the worst part of it for me.
I was going to mention something about that but the study was done in Italy.
