Dozens of drunk seagulls have been found on beaches in Southwest England after scavenging alcohol, according to news reports.
Citing the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Sky News reports that some seagulls have died and others are seriously ill.
"The birds appear disoriented and confused and struggle to stand, explained RSPCA vet David Couper. "We took some video of one of the birds who is staggering around and losing his balance just like a person would if they'd had too much to drink."
DevonLive reports that one seagull reeking of beer vomited over firefighters sent to rescue it after it had fallen off a roof in Lyme Regis.

First the people. Now the birds. Where will it end?
England is in the quarterfinals of the World Cup. No doubt the entire nation is one giant drunkfest as we speak. Too bad these birds are paying a price for it!
I guess they are genuine British Seagulls.
Check the English team roster. Is there anyone named Jonathan Livingston on the list?
They must have drunk a lot.
Birds have very “fast” metabolisms, and relative to their size it takes a lot of imbibing to get them “drunk”.
You can often see them getting drunk under trees whose fruit has fallen and fermented.
There wasn’t a tern left unstoned.......
Elephant eats ripe fruit. Elephant drinks lots of water. Fruit turns into alcohol. Elephant staggers around. Birds too eh?!
Then it went home with an ugly she-gull.
LOL! I didn’t know that about elephants.
I once rescued a little baby bird who’d survived nest attack by cat. She was ok except for what seemed like a mild neurological problem that made her jerk her head back and forth now and then in sort a sort of trance state.
I gave her a few drops of red wine, once in a great while. Seemed to make her happy, and she lived far beyond the wild lifespan :-)
*Whistles while slowly walking away*
Give them some alka-selzter they will be fine.
I saw drunk birds at a distillery in Kentucky years ago. They got that way from eating the discarded grain from the distilling process.
My favorite true story about my dear English friend.
I’ve posted this before but considering the date, I’ll post it again.
I worked with this guy from London and meet him when he came to the US for work. We hit it off almost instantly and became good friends. Very intelligent, affable go lucky Brit that had a tendency to disparage America and Americans. This, I would never let pass.
On one trip to the U.S. he and his wife had some free time and rented a car drove from Washington D.C. up to Boston and back just to experience America. When they returned I asked him about his trip and what he thought. He said it was “Great”, but, “You Americans have no creativity”, I asked “What do you mean”, He said “Virtually every town or city is named after places in England”, I shot back in an instant “We weren’t Americans then”. He was destroyed and he knew it, so he said “Well done”. Then we spent the day celebrating on the Mall in D.C. on July 4th. He was having a great time and I asked him if he thought it was ironic for him, as a proud Brit, to be celebrating America’s Independence?
He was dumbfounded and I don’t think anybody has ever challenged his anti-American views.
There’s so much more.
Now that is funny.
