That is precisely why one would use a shotgun on small game. Small shot from a shotgun willnot carry very far under any circumstances. Squirrels fall prey to shotguns quite often in Georgia.

Every time I've taken out a squirrel I've done it with my old .22 Remington pump.

A .22LR would be my choice as well, but a Marlin bolt action. It sure leaves more of the squirrel.
