Fungi that live in cockroaches, oil paintings, and other bizarre places come to light in new report

Those pale button mushrooms in your supermarket hardly do justice to the diversity of fungi. The world hosts an incredible array of these important organisms—and mycologists are discovering more than 2000 new species a year, including ones that live on driftwood, bat guano, and even an oil painting. That’s according to a new report, titled State of the World’s Fungi, from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, a botanical research institution in Richmond, U.K. The lavishly illustrated overview covers the usefulness of fungi (think beer, bread, and penicillin, for starters) as well as the serious threats that some fungi pose to agriculture and human health.

Science spoke to Tuula Niskanen, a mycologist at Kew, who helped write the chapter on new discoveries. This interview has been edited for clarity and length.

Q: One of the new discoveries was a fungus that lives inside cockroaches. Tell me more.

A: It’s a single-celled fungus that lives within the Malpighian tubules, which are equivalent to kidneys, of a tropical cockroach. It lives within the cells and parasitizes them, breaking them up and feeding on them. The fungus doesn’t necessarily kill the host—that’s not a smart strategy for a parasite. It’s not the first such species—the genus was first described in 1937—but it’s the first species described in the Madeira cockroach.

Is this anything like the “Clinton” fungi that has inhabited the US?

FRiendly suggestion for those interested in the topic of parasitical fungi: If you harbor any impaired health symptoms whatsoever - particularly of the gut - you would do well to learn more about Candida albicans, one of a number of particularly-nasty human parasites responsible for parasitical infections for which there is no medical name. I wrote my 2nd book largely upon this organism and my experience in eradicating it from my body (still ongoing 2 full years later).

Man alive how did I ever live before not knowing about single celled fungi that feed on cockroach kidneys? Wow, how interesting.

As-yet unpublished with a new top-secret name and approach which will up-end traditional views.

I cured a 40 year candida infection of my gut and reversed over 60 physical symptoms of impaired health.

I’m still healing. However, I later learned that the candida took hold in my sinuses and am still coping with treatment which is making progress as I adapt my approach. Hopefully a treatment regimen will result for others absent the other 2 options: Surgery and/or toxic antifungal medications.

If you’re genuinely-interested in a novel approach to health - a compendium of other approaches via my own methodology - PM me and I’ll put you on the list. I hope to have the final volume of what will be a 4 volume set completed by Spring. Nobody is addressing health from my angle and it could revolutionize treatment by doctors...assuming they really want to cure anything at all these days. Rather than being captive to your health and dependent upon the doctor and government, my approach is rather Conservative: Your health will set you free.

Be well.

I am currently battling a fungi living in my hair. Efforts to kill it are so far ineffective. I will revisit the dermatologist again next week

As a fungi man, can you post to the issue that fungi are the third kingdom in addition to plants and animals?
