As American scientists prepare to announce the location of the remains of Endeavour, a battle is expected over whether Britain, the United States or Australia gets the wreck of James Cook's famed ship.

A team of marine archaeologists from Australia and the US said they believe they may have found the resting place of the ship – used by the British explorer on a voyage of discovery to Australia in 1768 - 25 years after beginning their search.

They are expected to announce on Friday 'one or two' sites in Newport Harbour in Rhode Island, where the Endeavour was scuttled during the American War of Independence in 1778.

Kathy Abbass, the director of the Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Project, told The Telegraph that project leaders believe they know which of the wreckages they have been examining pinpoints the Endeavour.

Well, this should answer the long-debated (/s) question as to whether anyone who wants the steel can lay claim to any of our warships we’ve intentionally scuttled for reef/habitat support.

If she is HMS Endeavour, doesn’t she still belong to Great Britain?

Normally Military shipwrecks belong to the country that commissioned the vessel but the 2004 Sunken Military Craft Act may apply. The question is if the vessel was scuttled was the commission abandoned?

If it's concrete it doesn't glow...:^)

One of the Bikini Atoll atomic test ship is now a breakwater in Powell River, BC. - SS Quartz has a concrete hull.

Britain scuttled the HMS Endeavour thereby releasing any claim to it. It is in US Water inside the 200, 12, and 3 mile limits.
It would be polite if we relinquished to them, provided the ask nicely and that the British provide a quid pro quo for any historical US items, current or future, that we may be interested in.

Seems that actually finding the Endeavour has been quite a, well, endeavor.

:^D When I read the first of the articles out there on the www, I had to then go out and look up the term HMB. HMS is obviously familiar..

According to Wiki (I know ...) the Navy struck her off the list and she fell under private ownership as the Lord Sandwich. She was hired by the RN during the Revolutionary War as a troop transport. So, if she was not a commissioned Royal Navy ship, what is Britain’s claim?
