I hit a poor deer once and was horrified to see her jump up and run off...I doubt she got far or lived long. I’d bet the same for this poor little fella.
Just picture what a cat - EVEN one you feed and house - will do to you in the act of trying to ‘save’ it...

I can personally attest to that; had a coyote in the area got one of our cats and a week later came back for another one, cat trees and coyote ran away when I came out; cat was so glad to see me she clawed me repeatedly in the face.
