Congress takes aim at shrinking seats, legroom on airplanes

The Federal Aviation Administration would be required to set new minimum requirements for seats on airplanes under legislation to be considered in the House this week, possibly giving passengers a break from ever-shrinking legroom and cramped quarters.

The regulation of seat width and legroom is part of a five-year extension of federal aviation programs announced early Saturday by Republican and Democratic leaders of the House and Senate committees that oversee the nation’s air travel.

Congress faces a Sept. 30 deadline to keep FAA programs running. The Senate will also need to take up the bill this week or both chambers will need to pass a short-term extension.

The bill would prohibit the involuntary bumping of passengers who have already boarded a plane. But in a nod to the power of the commercial airliners, lawmakers declined to include language that would have prohibited airlines from imposing fees deemed “not reasonable and proportional.” …

The airlines brought it on themselves.

Now they can reap what they’ve sown.

Still not setting foot on an airplane, though.

nothing significant will be done...the airlines used 911/financial takedown to limit flights, increase prices, decrease courtesy, etc...

afterall, we are the sheeple..

and sheeple do what theyre told....

well, not me....I won't fly unless I can't drive which is rarely...

I am not amused. Congress is going to raise the price of my airfare with this or keep it above what it might be.

The AA flight I was on Friday night was noticeably more cramped than my last Alaska flight. I’m only 5 feet tall, but I had to twist myself into a pretzel to get to my bag under the seat. How does anybody over 5’5” manage it?

“The airlines brought it on themselves. Now they can reap what they’ve sown. Still not setting foot on an airplane, though” I’ve done a lot of flying, including many @$$ numbing biter national flights to Asia, some business and some economy class. I’m retired now and don’t “have” to fly anywhere. I drive wherever I go any enjoy it a hell of a lot more. Sometimes I tow my camper if overnighting is necessary. Don’t have to screw with hotels either. Happy, happy, happy 😃!!!

Speaking only for myself, I would like the option of LESS seat and leg room. I am 5 foot 7 and very flexible. I sit with my legs folded under me even in an ordinary chair, and can do that in an airline seat with room to spare. In my ideal world, there would be an airline that offered small spaces (at a discount, of course) for people who wanted them.

Don’t give a crap, congress is not at fault in every single case, and this is one of them.

The “con” is the opposite of “pro”, then what’s the opposite of “progress”?

Why is congress investigating leg room in the first place? There are countless more important things they should be looking into.

I’m 5’7”, 140 lbs. Its nice having airline seats and Amtrak sleepers designed for me. I wish DC would look into lowering top shelves in stores and basketball goals.

Unless I’m on a small shuttle with 19 seats, I don’t usually have much problem with seating space. And it’s a heck of a lotore comfortable than a bus. Seating on busses can be horrid.

I never enjoyed flying, but I didnt use to loathe it. Between the lack of leg room, the coffin-sized cans, the bad air, the delays, the cancellations, the lack of direct flights....it’s an over-priced, torturous PITA. I’d rather have a simultaneous root canal and IRS audit that fky. And I can say that withe confidence.

Gad, I wish Fedzilla would privatize AMTRAK and let the private sector have at it.

I’m guessing your favorite car would be something like the 1957-75 Fiat 500.
