Candling unclogged my ear canal once. The only problem was, it left my other ear canal clogged with candle wax!

(Thank you, thank you very much!)

I lost all hearing in my left ear. Went to the House Clinic who informed me that my only options were cochlear or a cross hearing aid. I opted for the Phonak cross. I now have their regular hearing aid in my right ear which picks up sounds on my left side through a microphone which sits on top of my left ear. Works great!

I was taken to the emergency room in July for extreme vertigo and nausea. An MRI showed a slight bulge on the nerve in the inner ear, but they did not treat it and my ENT doctor gave it a shrug. However, I find my hearing has diminished somewhat and I continue to have ringing in my ears.

I have a cousin who lost hearing in one ear 100% literally overnight. At the time she was a surgical nurse and the doctors were stumped. They found brain lesions and suspected meningitis. She went through hell, had a spinal tap, had to wait three weeks to get results that came back negative.

They finally attributed it to her flu shot. She had just gotten one for the first time ever and while rare it can cause bad side affects. She was told it simply affected her body that way and advised her never to get one again. I know it scared me after that and I refuse to get one too but I’m extremely healthy so even my doctor agrees not to get it. That’s me but her experience really scared me.

She will never regain hearing in that ear.

I hope your wife gets some help. I’m so sorry for her.

Herpesvirus attacks the V Cranial Nerve and can affect the 3,7, and 8 that go thru the middle ear. I would consider that a valid differential diagnosis for the loss of hearing in the middle ear. Balance, eye coordination and intestinal upset can be collateral symptoms.

Same thing happened to Rush Limbaugh. Haters all said it was drug addiction that caused it.

Sorry for what your wife is going through. Sounds like prayer, time and steroid shots might be the answer for her. I know 3 people who have cochlear implants. One is ecstatic. The other two are certainly happy to have them but their hearing has only improved 50-70 %. Not bad from nothing. For those who don’t know Medicare covers the cost of the implants and batteries which need to be changed daily.

You can get those childhood diseases multiple times. I’ve had chicken pox 3 or 4 times. Mumps also as an adult.

ALL anti-inflamitories (including aspirin) are ototoxic. That’s what happened to Rush Limbaugh. Is she on those?

I know this sounds bizarre...

Often this is caused by a shift in consciousnes as a result of separation from a loved one. This is especially true for females as their consciousness flow is more circular.

This ties in with the vagus nerve or tenth cranial nerve stimulation that shuts down cerebellum neural transmission that causes car sickness from riding in the back seat or sea sickness, the cure is to focus on the horizon or at a distance.

Happened to me last fall. Eustachian tubes swell shut. You are deaf as a doornail. I ordered a product from Amazon called Eustachi. It helps force air into your Eustachian tubes to open them. Also, she can hold her nose and blow like you would to adjust your pressure on a plane. Give it about 6 weeks.

I lost my hearing in my right ear back in the fall of 1988. Pretty much one minute I had it and the next minute I didn’t. Felt dizzy, sat down and rested a bit (was on a field project in Arkansas at the time) and got up feeling fine except for hearing loss. It was strange at first.

The usual round on family doctor, two audiologists, the verdict was no hearing in the right ear but the ‘good news’ was that there was no instance of the second ear going like the first in the literature at that time.

They advised not to try the hearing aids available then, they just didn’t work. After this long it really doesn’t matter all that much to me, I’ve just got used to it.

I had a friend who was battling simultaneous MRSA AND Clostridioides difficile post heart transplant. He was 99% a goner, but as a last resort he was given IV gentamicin and within minutes experienced a profound loss of hearing. He lost 70% in one ear and 50% in the other ear and today has severe tinnitus that sounds like a line of gravel trucks running through his head. As it turns out this drug has ototoxic effects. His life was saved but the price was very high.

I did not know that. I'll start wearing a mask if I visit a hospital.

Wear a mask and wash your hands a lot. Push the elevator button with your elbow.

I wanted to add to my post. Everything that could be done was done to no avail. I have only the slightest hearing in my affected ear.

What I was told by most everyone was that it was likely a virus. But I tend to doubt that. I had a long discussion with my ENT specialist and he opined that it was like a mini stroke in the one ear; that a tiny blood vessel ruptured cutting off the blood supply. At the time it happened It was a stressful situation. My blood pressure was elevated but not alarmingly so.

However I think that based on my experience with a detached retina that was repaired successfully was almost certainly caused by high blood pressure. I could see the pulsing in my eye. About three days later the unmistakable symptoms began. It was necessary to see a specialist who dealt in retina issues. Today, I see fine but I do not expect to ever get that hearing back in the affected ear.

I know this is an old posting but I am new on here and I was doing searches on hearing loss, etc because I lost my hearing last year in one ear from an acoustic neuroma benign tumor that left me single sided deaf. I have 100% hearing loss in one ear and normal hearing in my other ear. By the way - if you are single sided deaf I can recommend the 2E1: "Two Ears in One" headphones that are hand made that have both the left and right speakers in one ear so you can hear in stereo with one ear. I own a 2E1 pair myself and are a lifesaver for me.

Thanks for your input! I’ll pass that on to my wife.

Welcome to FR!
