What Can the Pro-Life Movement do about Planned Parenthood’s $1 Rent in Austin, Texas?
Texas Right to Life ^ | November 7, 2018 | Jackson Milton

Austin City Council has given the pro-abortion movement another gift paid for by taxpayer dollars. On Thursday, Austin City Council voted to renew an unethical arrangement with Planned Parenthood, in which the abortion business is only required to pay $1 a year to rent downtown property owned by Austin. The fair market value of the property is $111,000, indicating Austin is forfeiting large sums of money even though the city is bedeviled by financial problems. Fortunately, the Texas Legislature is planning to address this type of corruption and abuse of power through priority Pro-Life legislation.

The dollar-a-year rental agreement between Austin and Planned Parenthood originated in 1972 and will now continue for at least 20 years, with another optional 20-year extension. The City of Austin is so exhilarated over the new deal, they celebrated the “accomplishment” on twitter. Planned Parenthood does not commit abortions at the particular clinic location in question, however, the practically free rent releases other funds for the abortion business allowing them to invest more advertising and selling their abortion services to Austinites at their other locations. Furthermore, there are no conditions in the contract prohibiting Planned Parenthood from promoting abortion or even referring women for an elective abortion at their other location. The drastically discounted rent clearly benefits the abortion provider at all their affiliated central Texas locations. Austin City Council’s favoritism of the abortion giant is just one illuminating example of how local governments across Texas find creative ways to subsidize Planned Parenthood and other abortion businesses.

During the 2017 Special Session of the Texas Legislature, a bill prohibiting these sorts of contracts and anti-Life arrangements was killed through procedural delays and disingenuous political games. After the bill, HB 14, passed the House State Affairs committee with bipartisan support, Chairman Byron Cook refused to move the paperwork to the Calendars committee, where the bill could have been scheduled for a floor vote. Though the policy passed in the Senate, moderate Republican House leadership killed the Pro-Life legislation.

This critical legislation will once again be at the forefront of the Texas Capitol when the 86th Texas Legislature convenes in January. While prohibiting contracts between the state and local governments and the abortion industry, the bill will also prohibit any state or local funding of an affiliate that commits abortions. While Texas currently has strong Pro-Life language in the state’s biennium budget, this bill permanently codifies those provisions and will extend those provisions down to city, county, and other local political entities. If the bill becomes law, the current deal between Austin and Planned Parenthood would be illegal.

Even those outside the Pro-Life movement should acknowledge that the political and ethical controversies surrounding elective abortion should preclude any taxpayer direct or indirect subsidizing of the practice. To Pro-Lifers, any tax dollars subsidizing an industry that profits from the killing of preborn children is an abomination. Austin City Council one again demonstrated their eagerness to pander to the abortion industry, even at the expense of their own citizens. Thankfully, the Texas State Legislature has the ability to reverse this imprudent decision by a local government.

At this point I don’t think it matters. It’s not like Democrats obey the law.

Because of the amount of money contributed to political causes, PP should lose its tax exempt status.

Austin is a sanctuary city and total freak show. They do whatever they damned well please with taxpayer $$$$$, and the bill payers are just fine with it.

>>in which the abortion business is only required to pay $1 a year to rent downtown property owned by Austin. The fair market value of the property is $111,000,

Threadgill’s Restaurant (on Riverside, south of downtown and the river) is going out of business because their rent is $40,000 a month.

I can’t believe you can get a building in downtown Austin big enough of PP’s operation for $111,000 a year. Is that per month evaluation?

!!! What about the Real Threadgoods ?!?! Are They still on North Lamar ?

As far as the Baby Killers- collect a box full of Rats (Animal not commiedemonratscumbags) and find a way to release them into the Building. Then call the Health Department on them for having a Rat Infestation.

Maybe put 2 or 3 Snakes in there also. Like a few 4-5’ long Chicken Snakes and the Rats and Snakes can Play Hide and Seek.

I’m sorry all. That dirty rino who stuck it in the calendar committee was from my district. Byron Cook. He stepped down but my district voted a new rino in his place. I take no blame for the new one. Worked my tail off till the primary then to a run-off and the danged rino still got elected.

I also spent the 2017 Legislative session burning up the highway between here and Austin trying to support various conservative legislation. Byron Cook didn’t lower himself to fit us into his schedule once. Looks like with this bill and others I’ll be back trying to see if this new Rep will work.

Tired of these uni-party guys.

The Threadgills on Lamar is still there. I still have to make meal stops there when I hit Austin. Looks like the 2019 legislative session will bring them more business. And expand my waistline.

Thanks for the ping as always. This sounds like a bill we need to make calls to our state conresscritters about. Need to keep an eye on its progress thru committees and votes in case we need activism.

What’s the best way to get revenge on a cash strapped cesspool?

Move. Deprive it of tax revenue.

Easy? No. It’s never easy to move, but worth it at times.

Second, I’m told that PP spent over 65million dollars in tax payer funds. Apparently, they received 65million on over payments because they’re able to do just fine without that money. Document those types of things, submit it to prolife Senators in DC.

Be creative! Open a prolife pregnancy center within a few blocks, but on the same street. Even better if it’s right next door!

But above all, pray for salvation and repentence of those abortion workers. As people come to God, they can’t continue to work there.

When you work prolife ministry, you are literally on the front lines at the gates of hall. You don’t have to step foot in a center, or even give your time to volunteer though it’s a blessing to you and the center(CLIENTS) if you did, but even a financial donation...every single penny helps...seriously. But above all, pray. Not just once or twice, but diligently. Never, never ever give up praying for those trying to spare innocent blood.

The work they do is exhausting and frequently discouraging. The evil one pulls no punches in trying to knock them down. But they need that prayer cover.

You want to ruin them? Send in hundreds of women looking for all of the other services. Overwhelm them. Bury them in expense and paperwork.

It wouldn’t take too long to put them out of business.

We used to go to Threadgills a couple of times a month back in the late 70’s - early 80’s.

Used to go Downtown and sit within a few feet of SRV back in the early days and watch Him Play, can’t remember the name of the place.

And THEN there was The Armadillo till it was torn down to put a bank there. Those were the Good Ol’ days ! Frank Zappa, Robin Trower, Little Feat... Back when a $20.00 would get a Half Gallon of Bacardi Dark, Coke to mix with it, enough gas to get to and from work for the week and a Whataburger and Fries for lunch and still have a few cents left.
