Lincoln bringing back 'suicide doors' on 2019 Continental

Lincoln brought back the Continental name two years ago and now it's resurrecting a feature that’s commonly known by a name it would prefer you don’t use.

To celebrate the 80th anniversary of the model, Lincoln is offering a limited run of 80 Coach Door Edition Continentals for 2019 equipped with what are colloquially
known as “suicide doors.”

The rear-hinged rear doors hearken back to the 1961-1969 heyday of the Continental, when it was at the height of fashion.
They offer a stylish and arguably easier way to enter and exit the vehicle.

It's about time they started improving the styling of the new Lincolns. They've been a disgrace for the past several decades, widely used as livery cars.

Far cry from the gorgeous versions of the 1970s and before.

My parents had a ‘dark blue ‘74 Mark IV with leather interior and a 460 big block....That was one cruisin’ sled.

I’d love it in a convertible. My ultimate classic is a 1963 lincoln convertible, white.

A friend of mine had a 77 model with the 460, when he bought it he had me install an 8 speaker and multiple amp Pioneer system in it......stereo sounded excellent in that big interior.

They are only making 80 of them so they will most likely bought at high prices by collectors.

You know those cars with “gull wing” doors? Turned out the cars couldn’t fly. Total gyp!

Here is what Lincoln has been reduced to in recent decades, widely being used as a livery car in cities like New York...

Basically looks like a black taxi cab.

OH MY, A THREAD AFTER MY OWN HEART!

Actually, a few years back the “concept car” Continental was pretty slick, borrowing MUCH from the old days. But they’ve caved to modernism and made it more wedge/blob again. Not terrible, compared to most modern Lincolns, but not as neat as the concept.

I LOVE my Town Car ‘79 (we had a ‘75 also, but that was let to rot away in an old garage for years). ‘79 rotting away outside, but still doesn’t look as bad as the ‘75.

Late ‘70s Lincolns were the best, especially the TCs. Loved the upstanding RR grille. Fully proud hunky masculine car.

Why are they called ‘suicide doors’?

Continental?

Hundreds of thousands did.

Or are you seriously referring to “suicide doors”? That has LONG been a common term for a sedan opening only from the center.

If I could afford it, I would buy one for the ease of getting my folding wheelcahair in and out! As things are now, I have minivans with sliding doors as an option. Would love to buy a new Kia Sonoma, but even those are getting too expensive. Will be driving my 08 Entourage for a while longer looks like.

Those are destined straight for the 'hood. You'll never see a white person driving one.

And, yes, Lincoln will sell every Continental that rolls off the assembly line.

The Lincoln I had back in the 80s ate me alive. It was $1,200 to fix something about every six weeks!

I had two Mark 4s, a '72 and '73. The '73 was a lot nicer. Pretty shade of blue with same color interior, with chrome spoke rims.
