Between last weekend and Christmas, ten wide releases carrying a combined near production cost of $913M will vie for business in a box office marketplace that one distribution source describes as a game of chutes of ladders; there will be winners and there will be losers.
The multiple factor is wild, and many studios, (if youre not Disney with a Star Wars movie) like to assess business over the long haul, with clicking turnstiles all the way through the MLK holiday in January. Thats not B.S. when you consider how Sonys Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was able to excel in a Last Jedi-dominated holiday marketplace last year, earning 58% of its $404.5M in the New Year. Ditto for 20th Century Foxs The Greatest Showman which looked like it was dead with an $8M 3-day, $19M six-day, only to make 72% of its $174.3M domestic in 2018.
Currently theres only 4% K-12 schools off today according to ComScore, but that number will grow to 32% by Friday, and 100% all next week up to Jan. 1. Currently theres 69% colleges on break, a number that swells to 84% by Friday and 100% throughout the rest of the year. After Christmas day each day is like a Saturday-business wise, and its not unheard of for the average 18-34 moviegoer to see more than two movies during that time frame, possibly even as many as four.

Hong Kong was a $100 million opening.
The numbers in this article about Aquaman are all wet.

(My guilty pleasure show)
Judging from the trailer, they may have jumped the shark with too much computer animation.
To be fair, it would be very difficult to use ordinary special FX to portray an underwater civilization.
Theres really been no competition this fall. Good releases have been so few and far between that anything half-decent has performed well.
It didn’t look convincing to me.
I agree. The trailer looks ridiculous.
Aquaman has and always will be a lighthearted blonde character.
This film will make its requisite $100 million over the weekend but will tank fast and barely recoup its production budget.
D.C. MOVIES, OTHER THAN BATMAN AND WONDER WOMAN, ABSOLUTELY SUCK
"What Marvel has gotten right, and Warner has gotten wrong from the beginning is that Marvel puts its comic books on the screen. Warner makes crappy modern movies using its comic book characters as licensed properties." -Dr. Sivana
Largely true. I enjoy some of the DC movies, but the characters are used as pretexts.
Revenues BEFORE this weekend opening are more than FOUR BILLION US DOLLARS!
