I finally broke down and watched it a couple months ago to see why it was so acclaimed. I knew he won an Oscar for it and I kept thinking “isn’t this how he acts in real life?” Maybe not when it was made but now. When it was over even I was depressed.

Just doing research for the sequel.

Good thinking ... that makes everything a tax-deductible business expense.

That movie was perfect for THAT kind of drunk, with that kind of ending. The stories of drunks ... how it starts, how it ends, whether they pull out of the nosedive early or late before they die ... most stories, even when the drunk causes all kinds of damage to himself and others aren't THAT depressing - as that movie. Stats say about 40% - 60% drunks, totally aside from the booze (which makes it worse) have pre-existing mental illnesses, mostly like emotional - bipolar, biochemical depression and/or personality disorders. So I think with the kind of drunk Nick played -> you're looking at one that aside from the booze was pretty messed up and even had that character been successful quitting, suicide was in his future.

Many former active drunks if they just clean up their act, albeit it a tricky, risky and confusing task, but if they get past it and get solidly sober for a long period and preferably the rest of their lives, have great lives. In many cases, probably far better than they would have had, had booze not forced them to confront and overcome some of the deepest human questions / fears etc.

Not that I would know anything about this subject :-)

But that movie was as depressing as a drunk story gets ... but ... I would wager that the booze was not the cause of that characters problems, it was just a symptom that accelerated and dramatized that plane's descent into a fiery explosion.
