Yep, the cats are there for a reason since mid-1700s. They do rodent control.
I haven’t been in the Hermitage since the late 1980’s, but back then that place was amazing. They had so many paintings and stuff by every master imaginable, and it would take you weeks to even glimpse at it all. Don’t recall anyone mentioning the cats though.
