The proof is in the pee.
A federally funded study has confirmed, not surprisingly, that marijuana use went up in Washington state after its first legal pot stores opened in 2014. In fact, consumption appeared to double, at least in one major city, over three years a conclusion scientists reached by way of the unglamorous work of analyzing raw sewage.
Its stinky, said lead author Dan Burgard, a chemist at the University of Puget Sound. But weve worked with urine, weve worked with wastewater, and weve worked with port-a-potties. Its not as bad a port-a-potties.
The research entailed driving to two sewage treatment plants that serve the 200,000 people of Tacoma, a city whose drug-use trends tend to mirror those of Seattle. The scientists would pick up a cooler full of frozen wastewater samples, thaw them and analyze them using liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry.
They were looking for THC-COOH, a substance produced when the body metabolizes THC, the main ingredient in marijuana that gets you high. THC-COOH is excreted mostly in peoples urine.
Their findings: Consumption of THC doubled from December 2013 to December 2016. [ ]
Another important conclusion from the study, published this week in the journal Addiction, is that it appears a large number of users of black-market pot quickly switched over to the legal stuff. Metabolite levels in wastewater have not gone up as much as would be expected from the huge increase in legal sales, Burgard said.

This is important news. NOW we know to recycle pot users pee to save money.
Yes, I’m sure that sewage always has a consistent level of input to determine something like this. /s
You literally cannot escape the skunk like smell of marijuana where we live. If you go for a drive people smoking it in cars ahead of you stink up your car. You can even smell it when you are driving on the freeways. We have a bike path next to our house and people are constantly smoking it while walking on that path and it drifts into the house when the windows are open. The users couldn’t care less if they are bothering others. Tobacco smokers never made this much of a stench.
Did you bother reading the article??? it is accurate and confirmed by other observations. People have gone crazy with pot around here. What did you think would happen? That usage would go down? Every electronic billboard along the freeway is advertising pot shops. You must be pretty dense.
Stoned fish now?
I may be dense but I’m not an asshole. :)
Could they not just look at the volume of legal pot sales?
Oh, you’re asking the People’s Republic of Waszyngton to cut back on public spending now.
Only if they knew exactly the volume sold illegally to compare the two.
He's like every other stoner, libertarian, degenerate addict..........
They don't think. All they cared/care about is easier access to drugs. And they'll gladly tell any lie to make it happen.
In this case, the lie was that it would somehow improve America to make this crap legal.
And the irony is that even though the empirical evidence is in; even though we've seen the results in Seattle, San Fran, Portland, Denver, etc; even though we've seen what happens, these degenerates are still in denial. Especially on FR.
But we’re trying to ban plastic bags.
Just substitute one toxin for another I guess.
Snack food consumption up as well?
You’re likely FoS.
I used to think they were merely stupid, not having the intelligence to see what would happen. Stupid fools.
But the experiment has failed. Denver. Portland. Seattle. San Fran. LA. Austin. The addicts are overwhelming the system.
Nobody is so stupid as to miss that. So now the obvious explanation is that they're liars. Lying about the consequences. As long as they can get their drugs, they'll say anything. That's "full of" it.
Spring break in Florida is no reason to outlaw alcohol. Neither are alcoholics, DUI, nor diseases alcohol related.
You’re totally full of it. A backbiting coward too.
