Mandeville is home to Southeast Louisiana Hospital, a mental health facility.
Louisiana governor Earl Long was committed here in 1959 amidst much
controversy. In July 2012, the Louisiana State Department of Health announced
the closure of the hospital, citing reduced federal money from Medicaid.
Mandeville is also home to the largest certified southern live oak tree,
the Seven Sisters Oak.

Fun guy. His political enemies likely in cahoots with his jealous wife, had him committed, but forgot he was still Governor.
So he just fired the head of the state hospital system, & appointed a friend who released him.
The 1989 movie Blaze, starring Paul Newman & Lolita Davidovitch, is about Long’s affair with stripper Blaze Starr.
