Just curious... What town did you live in?Always interesting to read from people that have been in Deutschland.
Cullman, Alabama. I am not German, and I have never been to Germany, but we have a pretty vibrant Oktoberfest here, and there are a couple of restaurants that will serve you some German food. Lots of German surnames left in the area. Cullman was incorporated along the L&N railroad in 1873.
Also, we have a local brewery that brews a beer from an old German recipe that they found in a relative’s house. The recipe was written in German and they had to have it translated. It is a great beer called Richter’s Pilsner. The name of the brewery is Goat Island Brewery. They produce several other brews.

I’m not much of a beer drinker, but they sure have some amazing brews.
Not easy to do ‘true’ German beer with the purity laws they have since 1516.
That’s cultural oppression, for the newcomers to force everyone to abide by THEIR dietary restrictions.
