FAIRBANKS, Alaska — A newlywed woman from Belarus who was swept away by a river in Alaska was trying to reach an abandoned bus made famous by the book and film “Into the Wild.”

Veramika Maikamava, 24, and her husband, Piotr Markielau, also 24, on Thursday were heading for the bus where hiker Christopher McCandless met his death in 1992, The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported.

The bus has been the source of multiple rescues since it was made famous, first by Jon Krakauer’s book published in 1996 and then by Sean Penn’s 2007 film. Both chronicled the life and death of McCandless, who hiked into the Alaska wilderness with little food and equipment and spent the summer living in the bus. McCandless was found dead in the bus almost four months later.

Local Alaskans think the guy who died here was a clown. Did not even have basic survival skills. They say if he even had a map, he could have walked out of there.

Never heard of this guy. Looked him up on Wikipedia. He was a garden variety homeless person. Separated by his mental illness from family and society.

I was captivated by the book [did not/or will not see the movie]

McCandless was a fool. Throwing chances to the wind, when you are not prepared; this is why they instituted charging lost hikers in the White Mountains for search and rescue.

Recently NH instituted a *Hike Safe Card* which purchases support Fish and Game search and rescue activities.

For safe hiking tips and a list of essential gear, visit hikesafe.com.
Hikers and other outdoor enthusiasts are encouraged to purchase a voluntary Hike Safe Card online at wildnh.com/safe.

The annual card helps support Fish and Game’s search and rescue activities. It exempts the holder from certain search and rescue costs due to negligence.

I wish all libtards would make a pilgrimage to the bus in the middle of the winter without boots and warm clothes.

I halfway feel badly for Mr Supertramp, but he was just another misguided young liberal child. When I went to produce a documentary on Denali in 2002, I discovered that the bus was easily within hiking distance of the main tourist road up to the visitors’ center. Of course, LOTS of Grizzlies but he was no where near being “remote”.

Addendum: I guess I don’t know which side that river was on, so I amend my “easy hike” comment.

Meantime while she was trying to reach the bus, normal people were going to work.

Agree with you! Loved the book! As usual, movies don’t work. I was blessed to have visited the region in 2002 as a tv producer. He was on the outskirts but, I gotta tell you, we saw 3 grizzlies in one day!
