In a final scene of the Netflix documentary “American Factory,” the chairman of a Chinese auto glass company walks through the sprawling floor of one of the company’s factories in Dayton, Ohio, as an aide points to different departments where employees will soon be replaced by robotic arms and other machines.
“We’re hoping to cancel four workers in July or August,” the aide tells him, almost proudly, before adding, “They are too slow.”
Scenes like this are typical in the film, which depicts the fallout after Shanghai-based Fuyao Glass revives a former GM plant and hires many of its former American workers. The employees are at first excited to find new jobs, but soon find themselves struggling to swallow a fraction of their former pay, difficult working conditions and the prospect that, no longer protected by a union, they could be fired at any moment.
The documentary, which debuts on Netflix on August 21, never mentions President Donald Trump by name—but its message is clear: Trump’s promise to reinvigorate the industrial heartland is going to take a lot more than a campaign slogan. There are no easy solutions. And if some manufacturing jobs do come back, they’re going to look nothing like they used to. Americans will have to accept a new reality to stay competitive in the global marketplace—one that they might not like, and one that Trump doesn’t acknowledge.
This message is also coming straight from Barack and Michelle Obama. “American Factory” is the first project to come from the Obamas’ production company, Higher Ground, as part of the deal they made with Netflix to produce a slate of series, movies and documentaries that reflect their values. Higher Ground acquired the movie after its debut at the Sundance Film Festival.

Netflix says Fuyao paying $12.84/hour for auto workers? That amount won’t even get you workers at Burger King in Ohio.
Also, Netflix trying to keep its $131 billion market cap by hiring the Obamas? Very risky strategy.
Manufacturing is only 10% of the economy most of it is service related the Barack and Michelle Obama. “American Factory” aka the propaganda show.

I remember back in ‘95 some loser at the car service I was working at while going to school told me
“Why are you learning graphics and other software?? In another 10 years ANYBODY will just be able to speak aloud what they want and there will be no need.

If I had listened to this guy i wouldn’t haven’t made a bundle of money at presentations centers in investment banks in manhattan.
BTW, THEY ALL still exist today will exist tomorrow and next month and next year...
Those who cry about how all the jobs are gonna be gone are either retired, pessimistic or don’t want to work or make the effort to learn what they need to in order to get new jobs.
I have one cousin that is a CEO and one cousin that is a CTO.
They have both said that AI will aid in many things but from what they’ve seen, the number of new programmers needed offsets the jobs lost at MUCH better pay.
There’s always work. And there always will be.
Just gotta be willing to work. Or learn first.
It's ever been thus and always will be. It's preposterous that "Trump doesn't acknowledge" this. He's a smart businessman (unlike Obastard) who saw a lot of technological change when he was developing real estate. He knows the brutality of the competitive marketplace and how you must stay ahead of the competition far better than Obastard ever did.
Of course, if any of the Dems win in 2020, all these competitive problems go away because every one of those communists is eager to have the government nationalize businesses or regulate them to death.
Can’t wait to see Obama charged with Treason and for all other applicable crimes that he has committed against the United States.

Well, I do remember in 1983 a guy walked into the store where I sold Video equipment and said he was going to COBOL school and it was hot. My response, I kid you not, was this: “I thought I missed the computer revolution.”
Yeah. In 1983.
I did go to that 10 month night school for $2300 and it worked me up to a six figure income with out college. And one guy I went to class with, who had a year of community college, ended up working at the same three companies I worked for. We both worked in the same departments at the same time, except he stayed at one - a fortune 500 company - and became CIO for around 12 years. On a $2300 COBOL course.

Long term I think you are right. The equivalent of heavy duty 3D printing. Next step will be the replicators for Star Trek which will really change the game forever.

We are heading into a period where a lot of former human functions will be automated, in a relatively rapid wave. In controlled environments (like factories) initially, but also out in the wide world (self-driving cars, trucks and drones), and within the household.
It is already a major trend in factories, and will expand broadly into mobile functions during the 2020s. During the 2030s, there will likely be wholesale replacement of people in dirty, dangerous and repetitive or low-skill jobs.
It will likely be a more rapid transition, than was the mechanization of agriculture in reducing the farm employment from the majority of the population down to just about 3% now.
New jobs will develop, and the overall standard of living will likely accelerate pretty sharply.
That’s a Great story and I am glad that it all worked out for you so well.
Yeah, the graphics courses I took (and I had to learn office suite because I did not know it and how to type because I couldn’t) was paid for through a 5,000 dollar grant that was being given to those who wanted better jobs.
The “fair” I guess, had me and 3 other people attending :)

That 5,000 bucks the gov gave me was repaid UNTOLD times over almost 25 years.

Someone will need to fix the machines, load the materials, and QC the products.
