A signing bonus is money you receive simply for signing the contract. Brown did not get one of those, though some reports have wrongly characterized $1M of the total $30M guarantee as a signing bonus. His contract actually contained two $500k "workout" bonuses to which he was entitled if he showed up for training camp, which he did not.
The $29M guarantee he just lost was in the form of guaranteed salary, which covers both current and future seasons of the contract. So he has not been paid that amount, and legally, he hasn't even yet earned it. It just means that the team has to pay him that money in those future seasons if he is willing to play, regardless of how good he is or whether he is still worth it. Injuries do not void those guarantees. Basically, it's like he signed a multi-year employment contract
However, if a player retires, refuses to play, or engages in conduct that violates his own obligations under the contract, then his breach of the contract allows the team to void those guarantees. So again, it's like a guaranteed employment contract. Your employer may promise to pay you $100k/year for a three year contract, but if you get caught embezzling, you can be fired for cause with no further obligation. That's essentially what happened with Brown. He has not yet been earned the remaining $29M in guaranteed money, and his breach of his obligations under the contract means the Raiders have now voided those guarantees. Essentially, it's a "for cause" termination.
He really screwed himself.
Well, El Rushbo was right yesterday. He said Brown’s rejoining the Raiders wouldn’t last. That Brown is an overgrown brat prima Dona who never grew up mentally. (My paraphrase).
RAIDERS JUST RELEASED HIM!!
Boo hoo!
The Raiders really went into the toilet to get this arrogant prick.
He also audio taped a phone conversation with Coach Gruden, then posted it on line. In California, he needed Gruden's permission to do so (two-party consent statute punishable by a fine not exceeding ten thousand dollars ($10,000) per violation, by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year, or in the state prison, or by both that fine and imprisonment). It is unknown, but highly doubtful, that Gruden knew he was being taped, much less gave his approval.
As a Steelers fan, I just have to smile. When the Steelers traded him all the headlines gave this as a win to the Raiders and said they will do what the Steelers couldn’t, that was to lay down the law on him.
Let’s see, the Steelers got 10 years of hall of fame numbers out of Brown.
The Raiders got... . frostbite feet and a headache out of Brown. I rarely give a knee jerk reaction to their moves because many times in the long run, the Steelers prove to be correct.
I guess the Steelers showed again that they are a smart organization....
NFL players have the right to kneel.
I have the right to comment on FR and to not watch them.
been there done that!
Shoveling that concrete from one place to another is a real soul searcher too... ...for sure.
In my 45 years doing General Construction I’ve done slabs on grade, elevated slabs, columns, walls, aprons, and heavy road beds and runways.
The best stupid story I have for you is placing a machine placed tank road at an Army base, we had a newly reporting PFC ignore the signs and barricades, driving on and off the road to get around them, and drive over a crest of a hill right into our new placement and bury his Toyota pickup right up to the frame.
Trying to follow “orders” as to where to report.
We got him out, told the Army if they did not charge him we would forego any change request and helped him clean his truck.
Brown is gone; the Raiders have released him. Bye, Ryan Leaf 2.0!
This @$$hole is not stupid. He wants to go to a team with playoff prospects, and with a deal similar to the one the Raiders structured. The sad thing is that some idiot owner/GM/coach will give it to him.
Jerry would be such an idiot, but he’s already blown his money on Ezekiel Elliott.
LOLing
Every owner and coach thinks he has the magic solution to players like this. Joe Don Looney - for those old enough to remember - was a classic, as coaches lined up to get him to conform. Ditto Duane Thomas. Lawrence Phillips and how many others.
...what a cool story!
Bet that kid was sweating bullets for a time!
Sounds like you really need to find yourself a productive hobby.
I’d like to see the state prosecute him for it. But with his notoriety and that he spends more than $10k on clothing every month, to him that’s chump change. He is not the first player to walk this path. The latest one, Colin, is still looking for work in the game. And when he was stupid enough to try to blackmail the teams with the public introduction of coercion, he probably kicked any opportunity to ever play in the NFL again out the door.
Remember the first line in the player conduct rule:
It is a “privilege” to play in the NFL....
Iit is not a right. AB will find that out.
