I remember Joe Don, and he was stupider than rock.
But players of yesteryear were not in the same talent list as they are today. And the competition for a slot in the league is fierce with fewer than 1 percent of all college football players earning a roster post at the games highest level. So the talent is out there and the owners can afford to be picky. And when you conmsider the amount of colleges with teams, there’s a lot of them out there.
At the combine this year, those invited to try out, not the whole country, you fall over people like Shaquem Griffin, a Central Florida linebacker at 6 feet 229 pounds. One day after Griffins incredible 20-rep bench press performance with a prosthetic hand at the NFL Combine at 225 pounds, he continued to light things up on Sunday. During his 40-yard dash, Griffin officially ran a 4.38.
There’s a lot of talent out there that hasn’t even been heard of yet. Players who create a problem can be replaced in a heartbeat. See anyone looking at Colin? And a lot of quarterbacks have been drafted and signed since he decided to commit professional suicide.

The Patriots got him. He wants a trophy.

Thanks for the info; your knowledge of and insight into pro football exceeds mine by far. Your assessmend of JDL made me laugh. In my (earned) cynicism, I have the feeling that many coaches would look at a cancer like Brown and think it makes point-scoring sense to go with a proven talent, however loopy (I almost said “loony”; can’t shake the Joe Don) he may be, than an untested prospect. But in the end, it doesn’t really matter to me how the NFL goes, as I stopped watching it more than a decade ago simply because I enjoyed college football more.
