The film is "Joker," and while it comes in the form of a comic-book movie, it is the opposite of light. The movie focuses on the pre-Joker Arthur Fleck, circa early 1980s Gotham - a sad-sack clown slowly unraveling u At the Venice premiere, a moviegoer approached Phillips and said he thought Paris would burn as a result of the movie.
Stephanie Zacharek wrote that Phoenix's character "could easily be adopted as the patron saint of incels," referring to the "involuntary celibates" group of frustrated males whose beliefs have come up in several mass killings.
"In America, there's a mass shooting or attempted act of violence by a guy like Arthur practically every other week. And yet we're supposed to feel some sympathy for Arthur." The film "lionizes and glamorizes" the character, she wrote. She concluded that "there's a sick joke in there somewhere. Unfortunately, it's on us."
Is Phillips trying to understand his mind or glorify his thinking? Indict the mental-health system that failed him or cheer that he broke free from conventionality?
At the post-screening party Monday night, a debate broke out among journalists and industry executives over whether the movie could become part of the texts cited by potential future mass shooters...
Warner Bros is understandably eager to play down any such talk. That's in part because the current climate has led rivals to cancel movies - Universal Pictures, most recently, scrapped "The Hunt" after last month's shootings in Ohio and Texas. Any future tragedies could lead to similar pressure on Warner.

Hollywood just trying to promote more and worse crime. Glorifying that which will tear down the USA!
Is it possible that the movie could be temporarily shelved by Warner Brothers because of the current political climate?
“Era of mass murder”? What utter bilge.
The 20th Century was the “era of mass murder” (Mao, Stalin, Hitler, in that order,) thanks to the Socialism/Communism these people advocate.
The movie looks very dark, but good.
I plan to see it.
Portraying the villain as the protagonist?
What could go wrong? Its been done ever since... Harry Potter.
They’re already saying this Joker is better than even Heath Ledger Joker. No F way. Ledger IS the GOAT of Jokers.
I’m confused, are you calling Lord Voldemort the protagonist?
Already had a Bozo killer
“The movie looks very dark, but good.
I plan to see it.”
Likewise, although it’s hard to imagine anyone playing Joker any better than Heath Ledger.
Apparently, Phoenix has no interest in playing the character in a Batman movie, and objected to the character Thomas Wayne (Bruce’s father) appearing in the movie. The director won that argument, T. Wayne is in it.
It appears DC has given up on the idea of an extended universe. Probably a good idea since they didn’t seem to be able to get it right.
Yeah this is grade A Bull$hit.
They are playing their usual political game.
Heath Ledger is the Joker.
Leonard Nimoy is “Spock”
I won’t be seeing this most recent effort.
It might well be too much for the snowflake poofters at the SF gate
The previews look good. He seemed more pathetic than evil in the one I saw.
I’ll just view it as a totally separate entity.
I don’t see the need to compare/contrast Ledger v Phoenix.
I’m likely not going to see this movie on opening night.
Sean Connery is James Bond.
Did you see Phoenix in The Master ? If anyone can top Ledgers Joker, it would be Phoenix imo. Its my kind of movie for sure. Kind of a Taxi Driver for the 21st century. I wish people would calm down- its just a movie.
Harry Potter is a sorcerer and is anti Christian. He has no redeeming qualities and represents the world devoid of Jesus. He is a villain portrayed as protagonist confusing multitudes of developing young souls
They don’t dare make movies about the blackest villains - collectivists who believe they can make humanity better.
