Master troll Trump calls Chris Cuomo ‘Fredo’ at UN
American Thinker ^ | 09/24/2019 | Thomas Lifson

No doubt, Trump-haters will call it “punching down” and “unpresidential,” but I call it making Alinsky work for us. Yesterday, during a press conference at the UN, President Trump referred to CNN anchor Chris Cuomo as “Fredo,” a Godfather-referencing nickname that has in the past driven him to threaten violence.

Scott Morefield of The Daily Caller picked-up on the jibe:

Responding to a reporter’s question about Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani’s performance on the Ukraine issue, the president referred to Rudy’s wild “Cuomo Prime Time” interview last Thursday before slamming CNN as “fake news.” He then turned his attention to the CNN anchor who conducted the interview.

“I don’t watch CNN because it is fake news,” said Trump. “But I watched Rudy take apart Fredo. Fredo’s performance was incompetent. Rudy took him apart. The press doesn’t give him credit, because they take little tiny snippets wherever Rudy was a little bit, if he mispronounces a word they’ll show that. They won’t show the whole. Rudy Giuliani took Fredo to the cleaners. First time I’ve watched CNN in a long time. I hate to watch because it’s so fake.”

The president is applying Saul Alinksy’s Rules for Radicals to his enemy. Specifically, Rule #5:

"Ridicule is man's most potent weapon."

And even more importantly, Rule #13:

"Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it."

I’ve been wondering for three years, if this comes naturally to Trump, or if he plans it. Is he the master or the savant? I haven’t made up my mind yet, but I’m starting to lean toward master.

“Is he the master or the savant?”

....I suspect it’s a little of both.

He is quick on his feet. Despite being a billionaire, he is a street fighter who grew up in Queens, NY. He talks in plain language. You don’t have to carry a dictionary to understand him.

POTUS is very quick on his feet. Fast with a retort. He may think a lot of this stuff up at liesure; and is loaded for bear with it when some idiot pokes him inadvisedly. He lets them hit first, but has a powerful counter punch.

Yes. This comes naturally for Trump. He’s a New Yorker. A real one. He’s a ‘’ball breaker’’.

It’s both, but he also exhibits a reckless, perhaps borderline unstable edge; he continuously enlarges his own window of what’s permitted or expected . It’s kind of a Jedi mind trick, to project this vibe of “what’s this guy gonna come up with next?”

IMO it’s calculated, instinctive, and of course experiential. There is some part that comes from watching all the sports figures he’s been associated with, and the recognition that the greats not only put in the practice but they have an innate talent.

It’s masterful, that’s inarguable.

It’s NYC. The art of the put down reaches its zenith in NYC. Trump is the product of this culture and is a master of sarcasm. The MSM misses the joke intentionally.

Fredo,” a Godfather-referencing nickname

This is an example of FR's value. I've never seen, nor will I, the flick "Godfather."

I'd have had no clue what President Trump implied if I hadn't seen it explained on FR threads.

Thank you Mr. Robinson

Fredo is the dumb brother in the Godfather, knows it and is unhinged about it. Chris Coumo went bat crap crazy on a guy at a cocktail party who called him Fredo and threatened to throw him down the stairs. “Fredo” is Coumo’s biggest hot button and Trump hammered that button. Understand?

That's a shame - it's a great film.

One way I've always judged the quality of any film (or book) is whether it remains in the mind afterwards and for how long. Also, whether one can see it again once or several times and not only still enjoy it but notice new details. The Godfather (both the original and the first sequel ... you can skip the third, it's rubbish) is one of those films which haunts the memory.

It's certainly your choice to have never seen it with no intention to ever do so. Individual tastes vary. For example, love the camera work, but I've never been able to make it through a complete viewing of Citizen Kane without falling asleep about half way through. And it's almost enshrined as "The Best Movie of All Time". Others would classify Parts One and Two of The Godfather in the same position.

Gonna be awfully tough for Fredo to report on the general election campaign — which will be the major continuing News story next year. Maybe that is Trump’s intent? Show his employer, CNN, that if they want to be ‘relevant’ next year that they might have to reconsider Chris Cuomo’s position with the company. While many shudder at the rough treatment, the underlying strategy is shrewd & subtle.
