Here are the 'freebie' lettuces I got this season. Everything is tucked into the greenhouse for now as we've had a terrible cold snap this past weekend.

Of the 3 dozen squash I planted this year, I only got 5 pumpkins. And 3 of them rotted almost immediately. Today I cooked the remaining 2. One was pretty bland, but the other had this remarkably sweet, fruity flavor. It didn’t have the hull-less seeds I’ve been selecting for, but the flavor was good enough I’m definitely spinning that off into its own variety!
(These are from one of my breeding projects, so every plant is a little different.)

Bonus: I finally found someone with seeds for Carol Deppe’s “Bigger Better Butternut”!!!! That was the last of her varieties I wanted that I couldn’t find a source for!

Martha Stewart does these adorable brown paper bag gift holders.
Good for giving Christmas cookies to friends and neighbors.
Insert cookies....foldover top. Punch two holes to close with ribbon.
Dangle a snowflake or glittering Christmas star from the ribbon.

In the past few days things have really colored up around here! How are things in your neck of the woods, fall-color-wise?

BEFORE
A failed attempt at mercury glass inspired this. The acrylic craft paint debacle lead to spray paint--- would adhere better.
AFTER
METHOD Clean glass jars and little glass trees with alcohol and then wrap outsides and lids tightly
w/ saran and tape; spray paint insides w/ several thin coats of white. To reach corners, spray thin areas a bit......
a messy job Remove plastic--et voila--milk glass.

Just received this from our foster daughter who lives in Belarus. She works for the school systems. They had a contest for fall décor centerpieces and this was the entry from their school staff. She loved the picture I posted recently from the botanic gardens.

How cute is that! My SIL and I took a flower arranging course and we liked it so much, we took it a second time. :)
I worked in a flower shop for about a year and learned a lot.

I like how the shade of green they picked for the yarn matches the stems.

I am going to try pumpkins next spring on the state property bordering my woods. Need to supplant the knotweed field I’m eradicating. Turkeys eat mine, as soon as they become golf ball-sized. Maybe alfalfa, can plant to replace the Knot field.
This horrific storm in the news ... a non-event that I slept thru. no branches down! I found a colony of Chinese altissima, Tree-of-Heaven in the back woods, yesterday.
More supply of Glyphosate needed. When trees dry out over weekend. Hit the Japs, too. KNotweed.
Mordor never sleeps. Relentless Asians.

Easy salty/sweet holiday confection packs nicely in Martha's gift bags.
CANDY CRUNCH
MELT/cook/stir smooth 4 c white choc/chips, 14 oz can sweet/cond/milk on low.
Pour over 4 c broken pretzels sticks or twists in bowl; stir/coat.
SPREAD immediately onto foil-lined sheetpan.
Sprinkle with cup dried fruit of choice; press down lightly with back of spoon.
Chill/set 1-2 hours. Break into chunks to serve.
NOTE: Use dried cranberries for Christmas.......
raisins, or mixed dried fruit bits are also good.

I’m sending that to my sister. She makes the best ‘brittles’ you can imagine. We always do a homemade/handmade Christmas because neither of us needs one more ‘thing’ in this world. ;)
Thanks!
