Love me some Van Hagar
“THE most influential contemporary rock guitarist”
Define contemporary.
“Right. The metal pick.
Not smoking. Not drugs. Not alcohol. Not P#ssy.
Sure.”
That is my initial reaction also.
But, when given the info the cancer occurred on the tongue where he held the pick consistently over many years it sounds feasible.
Not that drugs, alcohol, smoking would not contribute.
“That’s how Michael Douglas ended up with throat cancer.”
In Hollyweird libtard fantasyland.
Too much Running with the Devil ???
The following year, Van Halen had that synthesized "Jump" single that was quite awful (but did hit #1) and they were on a downhill slide from there.
The rock and roll lifestyle is a tough one.
1978-today.
There is no doubt Hendrix is The Godfather of the electric rock guitarist - chops, attitude, groove, showmanship. Jimi stands alone.
There are, of course, may others prior to 1978 that were awesome - my personal favorites are Townshend (yea...he's a lousy lead guitarist but as a rhythm guitarist AND Live act he is unparalleled) and Zappa. Honorable mentions (in my book) include Buck Dharma, Alex Leifson, Alvin Lee, Ritchie Blackmore, Jeff Beck, and Robin Trower (hey, it's my post).
But by 1978, Disco was on the hunt, classic rock wasn't dying, and punk was rising. When Van Halen's first album came out, people were generally more impressed with The Cars' first album.
But those of us unpopular kids who bothered to listen past You Really Got Me, we knew how wrong Dave Marsh was when he said the future of rock was Springsteen...it was a finger-tapping, speedy, boogie/groove skillmeister from the Netherlands who conquered California and the world with an aggressive live show, a compelling band, and attitude.
There are greats post-1978, such as Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Slash, Dave Murray (who's technically pre-1978), Andy Timmons, Mike Keneally. There is also a whole generation of nu metal shreadmeisters, but they're largely derivative of EVH. May God find it fit to heal him.
One of the greatest, but far too unheralded rock guitarists of our time.
Im not sure where SRV might fit in to this discussion, but he oughta be somewhere.
Actually oral sex with multiple partners is more likely the cause. But maybe any exposure to tons of weird bacteria (like on his pick) could do it.
There are some oral conditions that lead to oral / throat cancer which is highly deadly. You ignore mouth ulcers and discolorations (symptoms of LP) and you risk it becoming cancerous. Dentists are supposed, with every appointment, to check the mouth for signs of pre-cancer. THEY USUALLY DONT.
One natural medicine for oral problems like lichen planus, scientifically tested, is a weed out in your garden, purslane. You can eat it, put it in your salad, etc. it worked slightly better than the rinsing steroids doctors recommend and there is study in a known medical journal to prove it.
Memorial Sloan Kettering, Boston's Dana Farber, and MD Anderson in Houston?
(Sorry, Mayo and Hopkins)
He was also a heavy smoker
we knew how wrong Dave Marsh was when he said the future of rock was Springsteen.
Marsh was an idiot.

Eddie sounded great at the US festival, even for YouTube.
He may look and he may be old nowadays, but he can still put on a mean show.
IIRC, a couple of fun facts....
EVH took lessons from Glen Campbell.
EVH played that hot, smokin’ lead solo on “Beat It” for the homo pedo.
Bonus: Rick Derringer, formerly lead of the McCoys (”Hang On Sloopy”) played the lead solo on Weird Al’s parody, “Eat It”.
I don't doubt what you say, but wouldn't we see more throat cancer in guitarists? Surely Eddie isn't the only one to engage in such activity. Or, perhaps, drugs and alcohol kill them first, on balance, and Eddie is an example of 'survivorship bias.'
You are a fountain of wisdom...purslane. I'll have to check it out. Thank you.
But I never, NEVER, understood the appeal of his music, his persona, his live show...we all know his faux blue collar/simple man act is an act - even his fans have gotta know that. Beyond that, I'm speechless as to what's the appeal.
My favorite Springsteen song is Santa Claus is Coming to Town live.
Ive loathed everything about Springsteen since the first time I heard him.
Awful. Just awful.
L
Saw him in 2000, Cheap trick too..
Trower killed it. Front Row to boot.
