What a sad, desolate way to go. It can happen to anyone if you go too deeply into unfamiliar terrain.
There are several dark, winding and unmarked roads not far from me. Most surround public parks. I would not drive on such roads at night.

I don’t even like driving to Stinson Beach in the middle of the day. That’s close to Sausalito, Ca.
Great vistas to enjoy, if somebody else is driving.
Some Cal, natives told me they took their driver’s exams around places like Stinson. So there’s that.

It happens around here on a regular basis, not fatally usually though. Here’s a good thing to do, turn around if you find yourself on poor roads with no markings in unfamiliar terrain. Don’t keep digging even if the GPS says so.

Ah, Stinson Beach. Spent many summer days there. Every so often you’d see the broken guardrail and spot the car down on the rocks !
