On February 14, 2018, my son, Scott J. Beigel, was murdered by this active shooter at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. I will never bring myself to say or type the shooter’s name. I wish the news media would do the same.
My life and the life of Scott’s mother, Linda Schulman, have been forever altered.
That being said, I read the Nov. 24 Sun-Sentinel editorial, “Delay the Nikolas Cruz trial or accept his plea,” — and could not agree more. To put the students and faculty through the trauma of reliving that horrible day is cruel and unnecessary.
“Going for the death penalty” will not bring our loved ones back to us. It will not make the physical scars of those wounded go away. In fact, what it will do is to continue the trauma and not allow the victims to heal and get closure.
Understand, that in order to get the death penalty, the state has to take the trial for the murder of our family members to conclusion. In all likelihood, that means many of us would have to testify at the trial and relive February 14, 2018, again and again, as we all sit in a courtroom for weeks.

I couldn’t do it. To live every day of the remainder of my life wondering if my child’s killer would somehow get out of prison, whether my escaping or, the more likely scenario, on some legal technicality. Just the fact they would still be breathing in prison would set me off.

A quiet execution and an unmarked grave will send the right message.
He speaks for himself, not for the other parents of students killed by this predator or for the state. he can choose not to testify but as a parent who was not there his testimony is not relevant to the guilt or innocence of the defendant, If I were a parent I would want him removed from the plamet

Within days he will make jail friends, cultivate hobbies, take free classes, have God knows how many marriage proposals in short develop a new life of sorts. It always happens. Give this POS the needle and toss him into the burner.
The Japanese do it right.
They basically show up unannounced to the condemned’s cell and tell them, “It’s time!” Then a month after the fact, they announce publicly the execution.
Though I think the murderer has earned the death penalty, and has no purpose wasting resources decent humans could better use, it is not likely that the bastard will be executed within 25+ years of sentencing, if ever. With that in mind, I can understand why a traumatized parent might prefer to let him rot in prison without all the farce of death penalty process and appeals ad nauseam. Unfortunately, that is a defeatist approach.
Only if it’s a Chinese jail.
And the United States isn’t on the hook for the body when he dies.
In fact, we never want to see it.
He won’t be rotting. He will be living it up.
Execute him and sell ticket for pay for view!
I am not a parent, but I am a sister and a wife, and have been a daughter.
I would rather have one grief in my heart for the rest of my life, than to also carry the knowledge that a very deliberate, clinical, considered murder had been carried out from some sense of ‘punishment’ or ‘revenge’.
I am against the death penalty mainly for one very practical reason: you can’t take it back if you were wrong. But I also find capital punishment to be philosophically very troubling.
I recently heard the son of Sante Kimes speaking about this, and he brought up something I hadn’t thought about: there are many people who suffer from the death penalty besides the one whom you believe you are justified in killing. There may be a mother, father, sister, brother, who is ‘killed’ twice - first by the knowledge that their loved one perpetrated a horrible crime; and again by the knowledge that they died a terrible death themselves, with no chance left on Earth to possibly redeem themselves.
A lot of those people might be completely innocent; but you’ve heaped grief upon them, as well.
(And some might interpret this father’s stance to be an extraordinary example of Christian faith and thinking.)
no. don’t make taxpayers pay for all sorts of crap, schooling, elective surgeries.
I’d be good either way. Watching him fry would be satisfying. The idea of some bigger, badder guy having his way with him several times a week, would also bring a smile to my face. If he ever got out on some technicality, or some libtard judge let him out... All the better, out where I could get to him. Even knowing that if anything ah “permanent” happened to him I’d be a suspect - having motive after all - I think I’m smarter than the average detective, and I have friends who would help - any way I needed.
The trial should have been two weeks after the shooting...then one week for appeal...then hanging in one week...
This trial will cost millions..and go on for years...
Excellent book all should read about the brain-dead policies involved in Parkland, that are still in effect in may places due to a national rollout from Obama/Holder.
