How ‘Cats’ Became A Calamity At The Box Office With $6.5M Opening
Deadline ^ | December 22, 2019 | Anthony D'Alessandro

The atrocious response from audiences and critics toward the feature adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats has no doubt upset execs at Universal and Working Title this weekend. The movie wound up opening below its $10M-$15M projections to $6.5M, and while you can’t expect much business-wise from adult-skewing movies outside of Star Wars before Christmas Day, the audience PostTrak exits of 2 Stars and a C+ CinemaScore indicate a significantly less than Greatest Showman or Mary Poppins Returns box office future (those two holiday films scored A and A- CinemaScores) for the Tom Hooper directed musical.

In an age when we demand other prolific choices on the marquee outside of standard superhero and family franchise IP, musicals have shown to be a solid form of counterprogramming that taps into female audiences. Hence, the biggest mistake would be (yes, critics, I’m saying this) for Universal and Working Title to not make a movie version of Cats.

Greg Gutfeld showed a clip on his show last night.

The “stars” obviously thought they were being cool and artsy doing it, but it’s hilarious how stupid they look.

Total and utter flop.

I know!

Revenge of The Sith Cats!

Cats with light sabres!

Jar Jat Binks singing Memories!

“Meesa have memories!”

I’m thinking two sequels.

I'm ready for my close-up, Mr. DeMille.

I guess people weren't impressed by all the heavyweight talents - James Corden, Rebel Wilson.

It's also sad that Harold Bloom didn't live long enough to enjoy this final revenge on T.S. Eliot.

I didn’t know there was already a movie version of Cats.

Well, this shows again that Hollywood has trouble coming up with anything g new.

How many versions of “A Star Is Born” have been made?

How many movies in recent years have spawned sequels?

I’ve never seen such a creepy, dark movie trailer in my life. Gross.
I wouldn’t see it for free.

Saw the trailer also. If they gave me free tickets, I'd demand my money back!

Your description sounds like mine when I saw the previews for
the latest Addams Family Movie some months ago.
Extremely dark, morbid and grim. Not like the TV show at all.
Too much Tuesday’s (Bad Seed) influence, not enough Gomez & Morticia (Sonny & Cher).

Haha. Glad to see Taylor Swift run headfirst into the TRUMP curse.

Who in their right mind would say let me spend a small fortune to go see a movie with James Corden, Rebel Wilson and Taylor Swift? Taylor Swift will now play the victim, again, and blame white males for the movie’s failure.

The real question is how did Cats ever get popular in the first place? Really, it’s TERRIBLE. And yet it was huge. For decades. It’s good the world finally got sane about it.

The characters might have looked different from the back of a crowded theater than they do in close-up, and on Broadway music and dance can make up for a lousy story. It’s not like people who like that sort of thing have a lot of new choices coming along, I guess.

The idea that people would spend $6.5 Million to see that Dumpster Fire tells me that this Country is in bigger trouble than I could even imagine.

Start with bad (and in the one song where it is good, unoriginal) material, give it a bad treatment, then lard it with stars who become easy targets.

Next question?

Cats has a 63% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Last Jedi's was 43%!

But since "critics" loved it, they didn't bash it like they have attacked Cats.
