Firefox will let users delete collected data thanks to California's new privacy law

Mozilla, maker of the Firefox web browser, says it's giving all users more control of their own data. The change is spurred by the California Consumer Privacy Act, or CCPA, which went into effect Wednesday. The new data privacy law gives California residents the right to know what personal data tech companies collect. It also enables people to ask companies to delete their data and not sell it. Mozilla said changes it's making under the CCPA will apply to every Firefox user, not just those in California.

In a blog post Tuesday, Mozilla said it'll give Firefox users the option to delete their data collected by the company in the next version of the browser, which is set to be released Jan. 7. Firefox doesn't collect data on websites visited or search queries, but Mozilla said it'll let users choose to delete telemetry data, which covers things like how many tabs are open or how long a session was. Mozilla said it uses this data to improve the performance and security of Firefox.

I have not read the law, but I like the idea of controlling my data.

does this apply to residents or also companies located in CA?

because google I am sure has a location in CA

A new California law that I support. Life is full of surprises. Maybe there’s something insidious to it that I’m missing.

Because of ca law, similar to the EU law concerning data privacy, they have to adapt. So rather than create a whole special browser just for Ca they are going to save some trouble and just build it as universal across the board for everyone.

Sounds great of course but have you wondered why FF and the others keep updating and improving their product yet still give it away for free? The data they sell helps pay for it.
I remember the brief period when you actually had to buy the browser.

This law could absolutely DESTROY Google’s business model.

Which leads me to believe that it is actually chock-full of loopholes and exceptions.

Well first they have it backwards.

You have to do something before they quit (or delete) your data.

It should be you have to do something BEFORE they begin to gather your data.

Next, I tried to set up more privacy on another site and they have made it very difficult to navigate around and even when you find where to go there is only once item you can choose to control. For each item you have to go back to the main menu. I am sure this was done on purpose. I am not going to name the site since I believe when people begin complaining that while following the LETTER of the law they are not following the SPIRIT of the law, it will be changed.

I like Brave, but I use Linux and had problems with Brave on linux. Maybe they fixed these issues, I will need to try it again.

[[Maybe there’s something insidious to it that I’m missing.]]

You can delete your data- BUT, only after submitting a DNA sample to California, and your social security number and bank account numbers ‘incase they need to contact you’

I’ve been using Brave almost exclusively for about 2 years.

I normally have 25-30 tabs open plus several apps open. A couple of months ago, it started taking about 4 minutes to open Brave browser. Recently I’m up to 8 minutes for it to open, so I usually leave the browser open overnight, and rarely close it.

Anyone having this problem? (I should have posted this as a separate vanity help request before.)

What are the unexpected consequences of this?

Will most current free sites and apps now become pay-to-use/view sites?

I had a similar issue. I removed Brave and re-installed, and it came back to superfast status.

I think a win10 update corrupted some Brave files.
