Walmart has shared that managers misused $20,000 of a Christmas donation from a foundation associated with Chicago Bears linebacker Khalil Mack.

Mack's foundation made the $80,000 donation last month to a location in Fort Pierce, Florida, where the star athlete was born and raised.

The donation went towards 350 layaway accounts that totaled $60,000. The remaining funds reportedly went to employees in a decision made by the store's management.

At least it’s a more effective percent of “donations” to charity than the government offers.

The Wal-Mart in Buford, GA had their HR staff steal all of the cash meant for the Children’s Miracle Network. They were all fired.

I have a relative who worked there when he got out of high school

It is a pretty crappy place to work.

Although, they pay their managers well.

How hard would it have been for store management to make a call and ask “Mr. Mack, we only used $60,000 of your $80,000 donation. What would you like us to do with the remaining $20,000”?

“Management” - right.

This previous story reads like he was given a total.

Which makes me wonder if it was fraud at the outset rather than greed at the end

If Odell Beckham Jr had paid off some Walmart accounts instead of this clown move last night at LSU game it would have saved a lot of time and money that is going to come from an NCAA investigation

Kudos to Mack for trying to do something good with his money. Sorry he got taken advantage of by fraudsters

How do we know his “donations” are even for people who are needy? What insight or wisdom does it take to just throw money at a “lay-away” list? Does "lay-away” automatically mean “poor” or is it just people who maybe don’t want to take a gift home immediately, or are get their salary or checks on different cycles?

I’m not being cynical. I see such things on the news and wonder.

A line worker ain’t doing great, but if you can put up with it and willing to work your way up, store managers make decent money.

I don’t know if I could deal with all the crap a store manager I am sure has to do for that money, but...

Who cares if they are poor or not? He did it as a Christmas Gift.... Does every gift you give at Christmas only go to the needy?

However, generally speaking Layaway is overwhelmingly used statistically by those who are in need over those who are higher up the socioeconomic spectrum.

Khalil Mack apparently cares, because his foundation specifically says he wants to target under-privileged youth. You may notice no one is paying off shoppers’ debts at the Nordstroms or Christian Dior stores. Yes, I understand Walmart lay-away shoppers are probably at the lower end of the wealth distribution. Given that 25% of his gift was apparently stolen, perhaps there are more efficient ways to reach the truly needy.

Anyway, its very generous of him, but I hope he is reaching the people he wants to help.
