Al Kaline probably had the best comeback ever to a heckler. One spring training, he was being harassed by some young guy who was really giving him a hard time. The heckler yells at Kaline: "You ain't half as good as Mickey Mantle." Kaline stopped, looked at him and calmly responded: "Son, no one is half as good as Mickey Mantle." Apparently, the kid got a puzzled look on his face, turned and walked off.
Al Kaline died because his pH dropped below 7. A little chemistry humor there.
I was at Veterans Stadium watching the Phils and Mets the night that Kaline got his 3K hit in his native Baltimore. The news was flashed on the Vet scoreboard. RIP Al. Say hi to Norm Cash and Billy Martin for us.
Saw him play at the first Tiger game I went to when I was 6 or so. Maybe 1969
I’ve haven’t read what everyone has written.. Been busy, I received a text from my best friend and my son... I didn’t know of the death until then... I’m crying because I don’t know... This hurts at this time... Call me silly - then call me being a 60s/70s Detroit Tigers fan...
