Short answer: Yes

Even the liberal 'fact checkers' admit that H.R. 5717 would ban the possession of so-called assault rifles.

Short answer: No

It would never get past the senate and president.
And even if it did, it would never get past the Scotus.

The house is the weakest of the bunch for a reason. It’s where pretty much anybody can get in. Exhibit one: AOC

Didn’t the Clinton era Assault Weapons Ban last ten years?

Never put our Fate into the hands of the SCOTUS. They will disappoint you far more than they will protect your God Given Constitutional Rights.

I bought an SKS during that ban - from “bear arms” in Bellevue, WA.

So true. How else could we have gotten to a point where Larry and Harry can pretend to marry, as dictated by SCOTUS?

“Fact check: Would a U.S. House bill ban assault weapons?”

Well yes the house would. DOA yes. The conventional wisdom is this House hasn’t passed much. The truth is they have passed a number of bills most of which were absolute nightmare bills and died when they hit the Senate. If you take the time to read some of these it will curl your hair. As much as anything they were kisses to the insane base.

So how would they enforce something so unconstitutional seeing as there are more than one gun per resident of the country and most of the trained gun owners are skilled veterans?

If they ever get a permanent ban on “assault rifles” they will be back for their original target, HANDGUNS.

The DEMOCRAT lies we have been told over the years...

1962 We ONLY want to register handguns. Rifles will not be affected!
1964, We ONLY want to register ALL firearms, not ban them.

1968 We ONLY want to register all guns, and ban the import of foreign Saturday Night Specials, and 5-shot bolt action army surplus rifles! (they got the ban).

1970, We ONLY want to ban small American handguns. Rifles will not be affected!
1976 We ONLY want to ban ALL handguns! Rifles will not be affected!
1981, Actress Lee Grant on GMA screams...”THE NRA IS A RIFLE ORGANIZATION! THEY SHOULD GIVE UP THEIR HANDGUNS AND THEY CAN KEEP THEIR RIFLES!”

1984, they made a grab for the rifles, and missed, but played their hand.
1988,Josh Sugarmann, of the National Council to Ban Handguns tells how to ban rifles.

“Assault weapons’ menacing looks, coupled with the public’s confusion over
fully-automatic machine guns versus semi-automatic assault weapons
—anything that looks like a machine gun is assumed to be a machine
gun— can only increase the chance of public support for restrictions on
these weapons.”
– Josh Sugarmann
Gun owners now know that any time we negotiate with those who want to ban guns, we are up against a stacked deck.

Let’s. It would be a big, “So what?” The worst thing that could happen to the Rats is they might actually succeed. None of them actually wants that.

Oddly, the 10-year sunset on the last AWB was added to get Bob Dole’s swing vote. If he’d voted “no” it never would have happened.

And remember the Clinton era ban didn’t really ban anything of substance, practically was limited to cosmetics. (Yes, “assault pistols” were banned but are rare/impractical. Suppressors could not be added to post-ban guns.) It really wasn’t an “assault weapons ban”, just a chronic annoyance for everyone to get worked up about on both sides.

New ban would have to address “semiautomatic detachable-magazine guns” to mean anything beyond last paltry AWB, and would thus be over-broad and not pass muster of House, Senate, President, _and_ Supreme Court.

Methinks it’s important for our side to stop holding the line and start pushing it back: overturn NFA and 922(o), make opposition expend resources holding their line instead of advancing it. Get some fundamental rulings that make it harder to encroach on AWs.

So on January 30, the tipping point for COVID19 legislation, Democrats were ... trying to ban guns.

Well, considering the bulk of the bill addresses the section entitled “TITLE V—ASSAULT WEAPONS AND FIREARMS SILENCERS AND MUFFLERS BAN”, yes.
https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/house-bill/5717/text#toc-HFEFA19D6404C4966A5E7D800788D5BAF

There is a grandfathering exemption. They know better than to actually criminalize what’s already owned. The goal is attrition.
