Minnesota farmers trying to find markets for their hogs and save their livelihoods
StarTribune.com ^ | 4/24/20 | Mike Hughlett

With Smithfield Foods' Sioux Falls pork plant closed by a COVID-19 outbreak, Minnesota hog farmer Greg Boerboom may face a grim choice.

The South Dakota plant had been scheduled this week to slaughter about 1,400 of Boerboom's pigs. Smithfield directed 25% of that shipment to another Smithfield plant in Illinois — with Boerboom paying the extra $1,500 in freight costs.

The remaining 850 hogs are in limbo. Boerboom is seeking a destination for them before they grow too big for market and thus face euthanization.

Over 3,000 healthy pigs were put down in Minnesota this week, and 200,000 more could soon follow.

"There's never been anything like this," Boerboom said. If idled pork plants don't open soon, "we are going to see multigenerational, longstanding [hog] farms not get through this financially."

Minnesota is the nation's third largest hog-producing state. And pork is critical to Minnesota's agricultural economy.

Up to 30% of the nation's pork-processing capacity is shuttered as COVID-19 cases have spread through factories.

JBS USA's big plant in Worthington, which processes 20,000 hogs a day, was indefinitely idled Monday. Major slaughterhouses in Iowa — also prime destinations for Minnesota-grown hogs — have been closed, too.

This is the Democrat's and the media's plan for all business. Pass a law allowing them to slaughter them and sell the meat real cheap to first come, first served for a week. The President could probably get something like that done.

Abolish the FDA and they can sell them where they want and manufacturers can provide the needed PPE.

I wonder if the Chinese have anything to do with the spread of the Wuhan virus at our processing plants?

Think of it as a conveyor line, and the pigs at the very front of the conveyor are blocked from being removed (slaughtered) and there are still sows in the farrowing rooms giving births. The conveyor can’t be stopped, so something has to give.

Sad solution to the problem is going to be hundreds of thousand of pigs killed, and probably just buried.

BTW I raised 250,000 pigs before I sold my farm.

Some of the States still open could manage them. Surely, not ALL pork processors are owned by China.

Truck them throughout the US sell them to farmers.

That would make sense but I BET that there are VOLUMES of laws prohibiting that...national, regional and state laws.

I’ve noticed in the past week that people are now buying up and hoarding bacon like toilet paper.

Shelves are empty around here.

After what we’ve witnessed with this virus BS, I believe they’d kill every single Jew, African American, etc. in the country IF they thought it would further their cause. They’re bloodthirsty, ruthless, radical communists hellbent on destroying everything we hold dear in this nation. Yet, Jews, Blacks, etc. continue to vote for them....it’s insane.

"and sell the meat real cheap"

Did not work in the South (previous FR Thead) when a chicken processor was selling 80# boxes of frozen chicken for $45 a box.

Cops shut them down due to the traffic jams.

They should turn them loose. Every pig farm that has animals with no market just let them go. Pigs will find a way!

Do not think that Fronteir Meats in Ft Worth (Texas y'all) has the capacity for all the Nothern hog farms.

Ft Worth at one time could handle the volume.

The Swift plants of Ft Worth are long gone.
