A no-till garden has a high amount of humus in the soil.

And about 25% stones and rocks in New England soil, and if I do not at least break it up (I screen a lot of it) then roots to tomato plants will have a hard time extending, and thus absorbing nutrients. Plus tilling is necessary to work in manure and humus.
