Bay Area father shot and killed during Sierra trip with son, who spent 30 hours hiding in wilderness

45-year-old, Ari Gershman, a pulmonary doctor, was off-roading in a new four-wheel drive Jeep with his son Jack near Downieville when a gunman opened fire. The gunman killed Gershman, but his son escaped and called police. The fundraising page says the son hid for over 30 hours in the Tahoe National Forest before a search team found him.

Deputies stated the gunman is believed to have shot two other people in the area on Friday. The two unidentified victims were taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. After the victims were taken to the hospital the sheriff's office received the call from the boy informing them of the shooting of his father and his getting lost during the escape.

The suspect's identity was not released, and the sheriff's office stated it anticipated releasing more information "in the coming days."

Hiking out from climbing, my wife and I with our kids, Colorado in the fall about a foot of snow on the ground.

A guy traveling in the opposite direction dressed in 'street clothes', no pack nothing, hours in from the campground parking? He ask how far it was to the lake? Hours and the sun is going down.

We had planned to camp on the trail but humped in the dark to the car.

Yes, I was carrying, but that did not make me feel good about anything.

The suspect's identity was not released
So, there's been an arrest?

From a different article -

‘The suspect was arrested on Saturday after a chase. His name wasn’t immediately released.

‘Shortly after finding the boy, authorities spotted the suspect in an all-terrain vehicle, chased and stopped him, the Sheriff’s Office said.’

They have arrested the suspect, who was riding a side by side off road vehicle. He was first sighted by LEO shortly after they found the son, and fled. Sounds like he might have been pursuing the boy. Not sure why they have not released his identity.

I wouldn’t necessary tag the gentleman you encountered as a desperado. The fact is a good bunch of people who venture into the wild have more guts than common sense. Every so often, you hear about people who go missing and the associated search parties. But that’s for people who told others where they were headed. What about all those who just went without anyone else knowing?

My first thought was they inadvertantly stumbled on a grow field. But with pot basically being legal out there how secretive do you need your grow field to be?

My dad grew up in the N. Fla backwoods and always rambled around in isolated areas after he retired just as a way to get out of the house if nothing else.

He came across a pile of empty fertilizer bags deep in the woods one day and high tailed it out of there. He didn’t see any pot plants (not that he would necessarily know what they were), but there wasn’t any other reason for someone to be using fertilizer that far into the woods. He always had a gun in the truck, he said you never knew who you would run into back in the woods.

Not long before he died (at 91) he was worried about me and the wife going to an isolated area to picnic by some springs because there were what he called a couple of outlaw families in the area. I told him not to worry, we’d be careful, I had a 9MM pistol packed along with the food. Dad taught me more than a few things about life.

There are still many illegal operations happening in the Sierras. You do need a license for growing more than a few plants.

Shot two other people to make it look like a mad man was on the loose?

I am familiar with that region, as I spent a lot of time up there over the years as my family has a cabin a few miles up the road from there.

About 10 or more years ago we were talking to a ranger who said that the “Reno crowd” had discovered the area and that trouble ensued. This incident could be an outgrowth of that development.

I hope it isn’t some Intifa type guy taking potshots at campers. The dommestic terrorists said that one of their next targets was going to be national campgrounds and parks. Anywhere that they can go and destroy middle class culture so that no one will feel safe doing any outside activity. Wonder when they will take their violence and protesting indoors more and more. Sleep with one eye open, my FRiends.

The legal grow operations are few and far between as they are so regulated that most farmers have reverted to illegal operations.

Who said anything about tagging a desperado?

Dumbgrunt didn't. Didn't ask for your logorrheic opinion neither.

"Not sure why they have not released his identity."

It idn't fit their political agenda.

“I wouldn’t necessary tag the gentleman you encountered as a desperado.”

I have occasionally wondered about that one, and if he survived the night.

About five hours from anything, less than two hours of light, carrying nothing and low cut shoes in a foot of snow?

He did not seem threatening but he seemed a bit off.

Not desperados but the gold prospectors can be ‘interesting’.

Most love to talk about their operation and enjoy having company... more than a few times just following a trail, stumbling in on them, had them show a weapon or point to the holster...
I can take a hint.
