This was discussed at some length in Graham Hancock’s book “America Before”. You beat me to it in mentioning this.
I think the biggest thing that held back the advance of civilization was low population densities. Hunter gatherers have a good life, especially when there’s not a lot of competition. When the whole world is your pantry and there’s no competition life is easy so why waste your time building things you do not need or even want?
