Anyway, what’s the big deal with smuggling magazines?

Gun parts leaving the United States require an export licence and falls under ITAR.

ITAR covered items. You need to register as an arms exporter and get approval for export from the State Department of any parts of a firearm.

...48 of which were 7.62 caliber designed for an AK-47 type rifle. The remaining magazines were 5.56 caliber for an AR-15 rifle.

Magazines don't have caliber. Projectiles do.

I hate this widespread misuse of caliber when cartridge is intended. 7.62×39mm and 7.62x54R have the same *caliber* projectile, but are different cartridges and require different magazines for the intended rifles.

They’re CLIPS, not magazines!

LOL. Reminds me of a story my gun store friend told me, about someone coming in wanting to buy a 9mm clip.

He helped the guy understand that he was looking for was a 9mm magazine for his pistol.

Good point. At least the reporter didn't say "Assault Rifle", or try to indicate that the "AR" in "AR-15" means that.

(FYI: The "AR" is for ArmaLite Rifle, after the company that developed it in the 1950s)
